Reprofiling a new CR?

OK, this may sound nuts but my first Seb was BG-42. That was, without a doubt, the sharpest folder out of the box. I mean that edge would just grab whatever it touched. I now own an S30V Seb and it's razor sharp but the BG-42 "felt" Sharper. There's my two-cents.

I am not sure that I agree that ALL of the older blades were sharper. A couple of years ago I did a trade with one of my older Sebenzas that involved getting an early Mnandi as part of the trade. While the condition of the Mnandi was as advertised I have to concur that all it was really good for was spreading peanut butter. Recently on a business trip to Boise I stopped into CRK and had them take a look at the Mnandi and the individual in the shop came out to discuss the knife with me. Turned out this was one of the VERY early Mnandis that had a hand profiled blade. He took it back into the shop and sharpened it razor sharp with apprecialbly changing the profile on the blade.

With all that being said, I have over a dozen early Sebenza "users" that I have had CRK do their spa treatment and they have come back hair popping sharp and in like new condition. The only Sebenza that I own that is any sharper is a Mayo'd small S30V Sebenza. I would say give CRK a chance to make things right and then proceed accordingly.

I agree that the BG models were sharper. Probably due to a differnt sharpening process or a different person doing the sharpening.

to be honest, most of the sebenzas I've had didn't come with an edge sharp enough for me. They were promptly sent out to Tom or before that, Rick. The edge really needs to be reprofiled for them to cut. I'd say that Spydercos are sharper out of the box than CRKs by 2:1. Even Striders, when sharpened properly (like by Mick) are way sharper. strange, eh, altho YMMV....

I have to agree with the original poster. Chris Reeve knives aren't coming from the factory sharp enough. I've owned many and none have been hair shaving sharp, what gives? My Spyderco's and Kershaws are very sharp when I by them. And that goes for fixed blades as well as folders. You figure that if you buy a high end knife it will be as sharp as possible. I hope someone from CRK reads this thread and makes some changes. It's easy enough to do

My suggestion is let CRK know they not coming out sharp. Everyone at CRK is very nice, but they seem to be in denial about the lack of sharpness on sebenzas.

The small damascus sebenza I got in September and the large damascus Sebenza I got last month were both sharp enough to shave hair from my arm. I guess they could have been sharper, but they certainly weren't butter knives.

Sorry, I'm not sure of the right word, but the ground edge on the Sebenzas I've bought, mostly from TNK in the last couple of years, have been more even in width than some Sebenzas I bought 4 or 5 years ago.

When I got my brand new (only several days old, by the date on the included sheet of QC) Seb in '02, it came quite dull, with a very thick edge that used to slide off what I wanted cut.

I eventually, after initial trepidation, completely reprofiled the blade myself using strictly the grey rods on my 204 Sharpmaker. It took many days, on and off, over a few weeks' period, until I set the grinds at 15 degrees/side, and finishing the very edge at 20 degrees. It cuts fine now, though the edge is still slightly convex. I know next time I resharpen it, I'll take it down a bit more until the bevels are even flatter and cut/grab even more.

I realize I could've used a diamond sharpener or something, but I did this also as a test to see if I could reprofile an obtuse S30V edge with only a Sharpmaker, and did it.

Buy an edge pro. It puts the Sharpmaker to shame. After re-profiling my sebenza it will split hairs in half. You can adjust to any angle. It will reprofile fast! Best sharpener I have ever used!

Is mine an anomaly? A small regular, last year - and it came VERY sharp. The kind of sharp I have to work to get with a good stone and then a good strop. It is thicker behind the edge than I prefer, but I have no complaints at all about how sharp it came.

How do you hold your sebenza to the Edge Pro and keep the blade always at the same angle?

I have an Edge Pro Apex. It has a number of good points but I have a heck of a time holding some knives, like my Small Sebenza Classic, on the ledge of the Edge Pro.
A big, flat, kitchen knife isn't hard to hold on that little ledge on the Edge Pro, but knives that don't have a nice flat blade I find really difficult to hold on the Edge Pro and
be sure to keep the blade at the same angle. I find this a serious design problem for those of us who sharpen more than kitchen knives.
