Repurposing a battered 'Old Hickory'

Grind an edge onto a small drill bit or allen wrench. That's what I did when I couldn't afford checkering tools. It'll work good enough for one job, anyway.

Ok, some pics.

To make the inlays I Dykem'ed a strip of 1/4" x 1/16" brass and scribed the diamonds on it. I punched then drilled the 1/8" rivet holes in the center of each diamond. Then I cut the 'blanks' off with a hacksaw. I clamped each blank in a smooth-faced vice and filed to each of the 4 lines. Tedious but I got a good result, limited only by my skill. The diamonds aren't all the same. That's part of the charm. Right!

I cut the rivets from 1/8" brass rod. I assembled each rivet/burr set on the knife and traced around the burrs using an X-Acto knife. This left me needing to inlay the brass and me having no suitable chisel. Catspa's idea kicked my butt and I made a chisel out of a piece of bar stock. I just hacksawed a 1/8" x 1.25" piece off, filed it smooth, beveled it, turned the other end round, and stuck it in a dowel. The steel isn't hard at all but it got the job done.

I carefully inlet the brass burrs using a combination of the X-Acto and my little chisel. I made sure of the orientation of each burr, and put a countersink in each one for the rivet to grab.

Then I assembled it and peened it all together. Here's what I got so far. It's a little photo album.

The Patch Knife so far.

There's still sanding and some filing to do. The diamonds look to be of wildly different sizes. In person the difference isn't so great.

Hey, that's lookin' cool. Glad you used what was on hand - that's what built America, you know.

I proclaim it done. I learned a lot during this project - my first inletting, brass work, plenty of file work, marking and layout, peening, and grinding.

This evening a finished sanded the handle, soaked it in oil, and waxed it. I also put a rudimentary edge on the knife - I need some instruction it seems.

...and I'm spent.

Next up... the sheath! I'll make a typical leather pouch sheath.
