Reputation points.

I heard that if you get 1,200 points or more, you get a free cheese knife from Cutco.

I hope to be halfway there by the end of today.

"What is the purpose of the reputation points system?

To give newbies another clue who is likely to know what they're talking about besides join date and post count."

Complete Bull sh*t.

This should be aired in the General discussion forum once and for all. The fact that this thread has been moved here is evidence enough that even the forum administrators can't defend this nonsense.

"What I love is how everyone says they don't care about them but every so often someone goes ballistic over a red rep point"

I've never availed myself of this stupity but I do care that some twit can ding somebody's reputation behind a shield of anonymity. And, that this behaviour is endorsed by the administrator of this forum.

I know I'll probly get blasted for this but, why is it only people with little or no rep points complain about the system, it's not a popularity contest.

This reputation points thing is bull sh*t.
1. Stop your whining. No one wants to hear it.

2. Why do you even care about rep points? Are you that vain and egotistical that you base your reputation on a stupid green chiclet?

3. Get over it.

What it is - is Bull sh*t.

I questioned this stupidity when it was first introduced. It has absolutely no bearing on someones knowledge of knives. It is merely a mechanism to show either support or dissatisfaction with a particular position or, a method of retaliation when some idiot has been educated.

I'm not quite sure what you mean, could you explain it in a little more detail?

;) :)

You get over it.

I'm sure a majority of users here do want to hear about and would overwhelmingly support a more open system.

So far your the only one with interest, my suggestion is enjoy the forum ignore the chicklets.

I've endeavored to ignore this foolishness for quite a long while. I do enjoy and value these forums.

It's high time this system was abolished or revamped. This system affects the integrity of these forums. And, it is my respect for them that compells me to speak out at this time.

Complete Bull sh*t.

If you could be more specific it might be possible to respond. That comment is so general ...

Service & Support is where we have policy discussions -- where the administrators will see them. You'll notice I kicked this thread back to the top of Blade Discussion before moving it so the maximum number of people will see the link I left in Blade Discussion....

"What I love is how everyone says they don't care about them but every so often someone goes ballistic over a red rep point"

I explained why the system is anonymous in the FAQ. I wouldn't say we endorse every vote. In fact the fellow who wrote the inappropriate comment to you was banned very shortly afterward -- not for that, but for similar behavior in his posts. That's the way it tends to work; the few who abuse the reputation points (and comments) also abuse other features of Bladeforums and get their heinies kicked overboard.

It's bull sh*t on it's face but because it's not that obvious to some I was more specific in a following post when I wrote:

"It is merely a mechanism to show either support or dissatisfaction with a particular position or, a method of retaliation when some idiot has been educated."

I got a reputation point for my post here.
http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=347271
The reason for which is even more inane than the reasons I outline above.

While I"m sure I should be appreciative of the various points I've received as a result of this thread it only further supports my view of the complete lunacy of this system. As people are merely showing support for my position when I would prefer they simply post here, their opinions.

I suspect the individual that was banned is back as his particular style of dinging is apparent in two other points I received.

I would very much like to see a single individual present an enlightened argument in favor of this ridiculous system illustrating exactly what positive benefit it has.

The only thing I understand about this system is that it exists
1. "To give newbies another clue who is likely to know what they're talking about besides join date and post count."
Bull sh*t, and
2."It really doesn't matter much"
Agreed - so let's get rid of it.

Let us do away with this petty system and deny those who, would anonymously and in an unsubstantiated form, seek to damage anothers reputation.

Well, the rep points are a tool, and like any tool I think it can be used well...or misused. Personally, I like that I can let somebody know that I am appreciative of a piece of information, or that I like his/her attitude. It is a good way of saying thank you and to encourage a behaviour that makes this forum a pleasure to visit.

However, I don't really see it as an indication of how knowledgeable a person is about knives. Cliff Stamp, certainly has a lot of experience with knifes, but many of his posts are so controversial that he has practically no reputation points in 7500 posts. The other example would be Sal Glesser, he has only 2 rep points in about 1500 posts and I think everybody would agree that there are few other people on this forum, who know as much about knifes. Looking at the few rep points that I have received, they have been all for posts which were only tangentially related to knives and which were quite opinionated.

I do think that rep points are a pretty good indication as to the "general decency" or integrity if you will of the poster. But I do have wondered whether some "buddies" boost artificially their ranking (e.g. I give you one, if you give me one). I also noticed that the maximum number points you see went WAY up about 2 months ago.

huh? Where did these things come from? Other people are rating what they think of my post? That's so dumb . . . shouldn't it be up to the individual reader to determine what they think of each poster's opinions? I've been here since almost the very first day this place existed, and I really don't see how the rep points add anything at all to the use or enjoyment of the forum . . . other than to create a Friendster/high-school clique of self-appointed "cool kids." I roll my eyes wildly . . . "whhhhhatever!"

Anonymity needs to be taken out of the equation. What you often get is someone who will not display the stones to state their disagreement in an open forum, but will snipe you when your back is turned with an anonymous red chiclet. It's like a roadside bomb, if you ask me.
