I must call upon the expertise of the Busse collective this time. If someone were to acquire...say...a FNMOASH (e.g.

)

what would be a good sheath to carry it around as a USER.

I've had a taste of leather and kydex on smaller knives, but I'm curious as to people's experiences with carrying larger knives with different mediums. I'm also curious as to whether or not the flying serrations pose a wear or ease-of-draw problem with materials like leather. Any advice based on personal experience would be greatly appreciated. Stay tuned for pictures of a FNMOASH released into its new habitat of Afghanistan in a few weeks. :D

Thanks,
Nick

Take a look at the rig I posted a picture of in the Crowinghorse Bolo thread tonight. Okuden made the sheath and it was awesome. I have no doubt this would be a good carry method for such a beast. Oh course if you go leather, Dwayne's fusion might be a good way to go as well. I can't wait to see and hear about a FNMOASH running wild in Afghanistan. :D

LeatherHogs sheaths seem nuclear tough. I just got one for my NO-E. Ask Dwayne about his fusion sheaths. Sounds like it might do the trick for that bad boy.

Heh, Progunner beat me to it. ;)

Man, that's a SWEET blade!

I would be inclined to go with leather. I don't have any experience with leather and serrations. I imagine it wouldnt be much of a factor. A blade that beautiful shouldn't be housed in something as cold as kydex. Leather is warm.
Nothing against kydex. It will probably last longer. But a well crafted leather sheath will hold its own.
I'd say give Dwayne a shout over at www.armoralleather.com
Just my 2 cents.
Whatever you choose. May the FNMOASH serve you well!

Every time I see this blade, it's like being punched in the stomach. It's beauty just takes my breath away. Congrats on being an owner!

As far as suggestions for pants, I would have to say Armoralleather's Fusion sheaths are the toughest I've ever experienced. Awesome fit and beautiful as well as functional.

This is my favorite style. It was joint effort in design between Dwayne and one of our ordained HOGs (Cobalt, I believe) and is the most versatile carry around. I bet you could even get it to accept Malice Clips.

And, If you prefer kydex, Okuden is the man. These pants are a great fit and easily cleaned. Tough and they drain well too.

Hope this helps, and Good Luck!

I'm slowly becoming a fan of drop leg sheaths for the big boys...there is nothing I hate worse than the damn thing digging me in the ribs whenever I turn.

Choose the style of carry (high, mid, drop, etc.) you prefer, but you want one of Dwayne's Fusion jobbies. Trust me.

That sheath looks like you could flip the blade around and use it left or right handed. Is that the case by chance? As a matter of fact, I was planning on using Malice clips. I wear a leg rig from Tactical Tailor (I highly recommend them) and I was going to attach the sheath to it.

So that's where it went. Damn you.:D Oh well, at least she'll be put to good use. ;)

I resisted it for as long as I could but I'm afraid it was just too appealing.

My main concerns with leather are water resistance and the potential for dust being trapped inside. I hear the dust storms around here are formidable. I may end up getting a leather sheath made and then just a Spec Ops type nylon/cordura for when I know I'm going to get dirty. I see these things at every PX, but are they worth a damn? Does the knife rattle around with every step and fall out if you bend over too far?

Thank you to everyone for the advice and I will let you know what I end up using, with pictures to support of course. The FNMOASH is currently somewhere in the postal system, on its way to my parents' house, then to a sheathmaker, then to me. The wait might just kill me.

dwanye treats the leather so it should be more than suitable for water resistance.

dust would only be a concern if the knife is unsheathed for extended periods of time in a windy very dusty environment. but the opening is so small i wouldnt think this a major problem.

the spec ops is a good choice, just lacks personality in my opinion.

Spec Ops sheaths are top notch. They come with kydex inserts that can be molded to the knife you will be using. Whether or not it will fit the FNMOASH though is another story.

i couldnt get my hhfsh to fit. i ended up cutting half of the insert the long way to get the knife in.

i boiled it until maleable, but still couldnt get it to work.

Those were my exact thoughts. I have a SMOG Warden sheath from him that seems like it won't have any trouble with water and the seal with the knife looks like it should keep most dust out when sheathed.

I know the Spec Ops sheath isn't a showstopper, but on the other hand, I wouldn't be worried about beating it up.

Anyone know the various SH thicknesses? How does the FNMOASH compare to the HH? I would think the nuclear bevel on the spine would thin it out some overall.

Yes, that particular sheath is fully reversable, the original idea came from Cobalt for his SHBM's and HOGFSH's. Sure is a versital sheath. :)

Dont worry about the leather getting wet, I condition the leather well. And if it does get soaked all you have to do is set the sheath empty for a couple of days to allow for it to dry slowly and it should be as good as new. If you get dirt inside simply flush the sheath out with warm water and set aside for 24 to 48 hours to fully dry, a fan aimed at the mouth of the sheath wouldnt hurt. I can also do a deep conditioning to the leather that gives it more water resistance, its an involved process, the leather stays firm, but not stiff.

So contrary to popular belief, water is not leathers worst enemy. High heat, drying out, and petrolium distillates are.

As I've said, Leatherman's sheaths are the sh!te. But, if looking for an inexpensive and decent alternative, Spec-Ops is a great choice. If you are having difficulty making a larger FSH style knife fit the large Spec-Ops brand Survival sheath, search my posts. It can and will work.
