I have tried my hand at making custom knives and its very discouraging when you only have sand paper and a grinder.

This is likely going to be a rather broad stroke for a lot of makers on here. There are quite a few makers on here who have made one or many knives all by hand. A hacksaw, files, drill and sandpaper is about all you need.

Bear in mind who is making the knife will also vary the price.

If you're really interested in making knives, ask questions, post pics and use the wealth of free knowledge that is on here. It takes quite a bit of time to make a knife by hand, it's not something you're going to bang out in a day or two even working 8 hour days.
