Requesting a Long Knife/short sword/staff recommendation

Gotta give a +1 to the Rodent Rucki (SwampRat) here...

I received mine over the weekend, and I'm very impressed. The balance is excellent for one-handed use. For such a big blade, it's surprisingly neutral in the hand. The balance point seems to be just about at the logo (a couple of inches past the handle). Mine has micarta grips, so I can't say if the G10 has the same feel. There's also plenty of handle room for a good two-handed grip. It seems like there was a last-minute change to the tip as well. It's a much more acute point than what was originally shown for the design. Probably the most "stabby" of the Bussekin swords.

At the moment I haven't cut anything but air with it, but just -holding- it makes you long for a zombie horde :)

They might have some Rucks at Knob Creek if you know anybody that might be able to score you one

The Rucki would be a great choice IMO. I have one and it is very fast one handed, can be used comfortably two handed, is light enough to carry, long enough to matter, and strong enough to survive. :D

OP, a gun best, but most folks don't have that option. I have no experience with Busse or kin. I have been seeing a lot of Basic 11s, and they look awfully nice. I have an ESEE Junglas and love it. At about 22.5 oz., it's not too heavy. Another awesome large blade is the CS Gurkha. I picked on up (black blade/sk5) for $90 locally on Craigslist. It is close to the Junglas in size and weight, and seem like it would make a great chopper and defensive blade. The Junglas and CS Gurkha both have incredible sheaths. I think either would be a great outdoors knife for you and both are good large knife/choppers. I carry a rattan cane bought years ago from CS while in the wilds. It would make a formidable weapon with it's steel ferule. I also worry about animal attacks when in areas inhabited by large critters, but don't forget that our fellow man is likely what you will need protection from. And I personally wouldn't trust pepper spray for bears. I've been hit with it several times (full and direct facial) and while it is very unpleasant, it even fails to work on many people. And people are total wussies compared to critters large AND small. Good luck.

Get yourself a nice sized piece of hickory, it makes a good walking stick and if you have to klonk something or someone on the head with it, it will make them think twice. Carry a knife too, but you don't have to get as close with a six foot piece of hickory as you do with a knife. Of course, if you get attacked by wolves, my suggestion would be to get your butt up a tree, then figure out what to do.

And make sure someone knows where you're going and how long you're going to be there.

Just put a wicked hiking point on the end of that stick and you're good to go. Maybe a big brass end fitting on the other end even. :D
