I am sure that I am not the only one this happens to. You have a desirable, perhaps rare or one of a kind knife, and someone with common interests (in my case, Busse) says, "If you ever decide to sell that, give me a call first."

My practice is to try to honor these requests. I even have a list for some knives. I value my interaction with other Busse Hogs, and have no problem with doing this. My only issue is how far to take it.

I have decided to go about three deep. That is, after the first three or so people are listed, the odds of the knife getting past them are remote, so I just say, "several people have already asked" and let it go at that.

The other issue is price. Say you determine an offering price and contact the person who wanted first, second, or third refusal, and they can't go the asking price. You post it, it doesn't sell, so you lower the price. Would you go back to the people on the list first?

I would like some opinions from experienced sellers/buyers.

I'm usually on the flip side of this. My feeling is this, I appreciate the seller allowing me a chance if they're looking to move an item, but if I can't swing the money at the time of the offer I tell them what I can do, but leave it up to them to decide to move on or not. I'm also NOT pissy if they move on.

As a seller, and it's happened a couple of times, it depends on my relationship with them. I really don't need to squeeze the last $$ out of them nor usually am I in a big hurry, so I allow some leeway. But if it's a smokin ddeal and they poke, I move on more quickly.
