Specs:
- Blade material: A2 tool steel @ 62.5HRC
- Overall length: 9-5/8" (244mm)
- Blade length: 5" (127mm)
- Blade thickness at spine: 5/32" (4mm)
- Blade coating: Cerakote
- Weight: 7.7oz (220g)
- Handle material: G10 - black w/ toxic green liners
Things I'm happy with:
- The blade coating (Cerakote), took a bit of testing and practice but I'm very happy with how it came out!
- I'm very happy with the heat-treatment too. The steel is very hard (62.5HRC) but also still very tough! I think there's still even more left in this steel though, I'm going to continue experimenting!
Things I'd do differently next time:
- The pin holes in the tang were drilled 0.003" oversize to allow the pins to be test-fitted easily. Unfortunately this also caused a bit of slop that made it impossible to get the handle slabs perfectly aligned during the final glue-up. Next time I would drill the holes right on size to prevent this.
- I accidentally burned a section of the G10 near the butt when shaping the handle. Disc grinders heat up the material much more than a belt grinder! I've gotten spoiled with my belt grinder...
- Using anti-scale compound has been giving me problems with decarb. Next time I will be heat-treating in foil to avoid this.
