Hey there,

I’ve somehow managed to become a knife enthusiast over the years, mostly by saving the folding knives I’ve owned, and buying more. Like many, I’ve watched YouTube reviews and bought knives sight unseen based on recommendations. I’ve also pre-ordered knives and have many notifications set.

What are general tips for snagging production knives with limited availability? I don’t know if it’s ok to namechexk retailers, but I frequent most of the major and many of the minor authorized online retailers. I have a few google alerts. I monitor r/knivesinstock daily (a good resource). Is there anything else to be done, other than instagram and TikTok? I’ve had a devil of a time getting some stuff. Any secret web tools or resources?

Thanks!

You need to focus on the particular brand you're interested in. Northwoods will post releases on their Instagram while Spyderco has their own app. Other brands use different channels.

For additional follow up hanging around sub forums here or other places if you prefered brand isn't on here will help.

TBH, I think it comes down to how much time you want to spend glued to social media for the purposes of getting a knife versus doing more important things in your life.

If you have a relationship with a dealer you like, the best thing is to keep in touch and let them know what you're interested in.
I've had people email me about certain knives and they are the first ones that get notified when I get something in that they want.
For high demand knives, you're competing with international collectors that likely run scripts and bots to snag new items.
They do (or did) the same thing with video cards and sneakers. It's frustrating.

This is sort of what I expect. I do pay limited attention to social media apps, but not so much that I hear about things instantly. The stuff I’m looking for isn’t that exclusive: there’s a specific Hinderer I’m waiting on and will find. I’ve had trouble with knives manufactured by Reate. One is driving me nuts now.

Heck, knives are cheaper than women, drugs or bamboo fly rods.
