Respect for this forum.

I was thinking a sticky of "knifemaking myths dispelled" or something, but I haven't searched yet to see if that might already exist. I'm sure they've each been covered in posts individually, but I don't know if perhaps anyone has brought them all together.

The old ones just get replaced by new ones, so that wouldn't work. It would be ongoing...

The tabu topics really haven't changed much. There maybe some overlap though.

Good question.

I find knife making simple. I give you guys money and you make me a knife. Oh wait....that's knife buying. Nevermind.

Heck!… Let’s just start the list with that.

The #1 tabu topic for newbies to avoid is:
(Only masters get to say it)

#1. I find knife making simple.

We will miss you Tai :D

Knife making is simple... if you don't care about quality.

and everything is easy when you do it half assed!

Two simple but absolutely true statements.

I am not a serial poster so not much nonsense from me. I always read, try, and then ask if I goof up (that's the way I roll (trying to steal some of Rick's wittiness)). I must agree with a number of prior posts that the irritating repetitive posts are because of today's expectation of instant gratification. I unfortunately think it is something that we will have to learn to live with.

Knifemaking IS simple for me,... but only because I'm a master. LOL

This started out as a great thread. Now it's going downhill. It must be taking up lots of space.
Why hasn't the MOD SQUAD moved this to Whine and Cheese?

Fixed it for ya Mr. Goooooooooooooo.

You are good, very good. Give us some solid, fact-based information (as your experience has proven), and we will be happy campers.

I agree with David. My personal feeling is that repetitive or irritating questions are something that forum members have to ignore, tolerate, or otherwise deal with. But, reinforcement has its place as well. Isn't that what training and practice are all about? Don't we teach our children the same lessons over and over until they get it? I'm all for the stickies, I'm a big advocate of the custom search Stacy posted. The interested person has to take some responsibility for a true effort to learn. But, if they ask a question that has been asked a million times before, do I quit this forum? No. Do I respond with attacks? No. Do I decide to give a response - maybe. Do I move on, maybe. Members are not the enemy here. Some members have more value than others, but almost all members have value.

Well said ERIK. Mr. Niro made some legitimate points that I agree with. Maybe we should start some type of personal mentoring thing where new members could pick from a list of veteran makers who are willing to stay in contact outside of this forum. The negativity here is really starting to show. Take this thread for instance, somehow it turned into a BMK bashing thread. Those of you who wanted him out got what you wanted. Let it go and move on with life. My viewpoint is that it was handled poorly and I hope it's not a sign of things to come. As ERIK said most all members have value. I made my first knife 10 years ago on a bridgeport mill, I didn't know what a Wilton square wheel or Bader B3 was. I didn't have internet at home then and didn't know any knifemakers. I believe if I would have had a tool like this forum my knifemaking would have progressed rapidly. To all the new guys, there is no easy way to do this. There are tons of good info here, but it still takes hard work, dedication and you may develop some OCD:D I have a great ammount of respect for many people here , several who have posted on this thread. But when we slander and talk about someones quality it just makes us all look bad.

One other thought to add to the fray. At one point I (and a few others) were chastised for answering newbie questions because there were more experienced people around who could provide more definitive answers. True enough, and that statement would apply to 99% of the participants of this forum. There can only be one person who is the absolute best at something... everyone else is, by definition, less experienced. Does that mean only 1 person is really qualified to answer any newbie question? Of course not.

So perhaps we ought to consider lightening up on the assumption that only the most definitive answer will do, and let people help with processing the newbies if they choose to do so. Sure, that will means some people will get bad advice, but it might also mean the people who dispense bad advice will get educated too. If we try to make this forum a place where only the best can answer, the best will get burned out pretty quickly. We need to be mentoring people to address the questions, and letting the more experienced folks guide at the higher levels.
