Hi, I am looking for some input on the subject of whether or not it is respectable for someone to sell blanks that they have put custom handle scales on, and possibly altered a bit. I am in the process of learning the art of forging, and stock removal knife-making. I would like to put handles on blanks and sell them in order to come up with funds for my future stock removal and forging projects. I know that its not correct to try and pass blank blades as my own work, but is it widely accepted as long as I make it clear that it is a blank and not my work? Thank you all in advance for any input.

I don't see anything wrong with completing or customizing kit knives. Just be upfront and ethical about it, and have some fun. You put the funds, skill and time into the materials, so i think it's fair to be compensated for it, if the person really likes or has a use for the product.

This will help you when you do start making your own. When you start putting a makers mark on them and trying to pull the wool over on people, then you have problems. Alot of those guys who are unethical about it sell them to the unsuspecting non-knife public. If they showed themselves here, they'd get called out in .5 seconds, with people showing what blades they used from the Jantz catalog lol. We know.

I agree, just be honest about what you are selling. Don't try to pass a blade from Jantz off as your own work. For awhile I was making folding knives. I would buy a kit, and use the factory locking mechanisms but put my own Damascus blade on. I always told the buyers that I made the blade, but the locking mechanism was not mine.

Yeah- just make sure to polish off the Mora logo first and nobody will know!

jk- I am waaayyy into customizing already-existing blades. I rehandled a 60's era Sabatier boning knife w apple wood scales for le papa, looks great! no pics tho. I have done a few Moras and since I love Old Hicks, I intend to upgrade the handle system on some of those too. Go forth!

This has been a topic of discussion regularly. The consensus is that if you are up front and clear about it, it is perfectly fine.
