I was a big collector years back but was forced to sell off most all my knives a few years back. I'm in better shape now and would like to get a collection started again. I am most found of the traditional style knives, such as the Buck's and pocket folders, barlows, etc.

Anyways, I want to start my collection with a fixed belt knife, Not quite a skinner/hunter but smaller. I was checking out the Bird-n-Trout thread with great interest, but they may be a bit light for general woods bumming. And yes, leather sheath is a must!

I got $100. Recommendations, please. Make/model would help, as I am not familiar with all the various makes these days.

I'd look into L.T. Wright knives, the Patriot in particular.

Wright was one of the principals in Blind Horse Knives (BHK) who has now continued on with his own company.

I got two new ones in today, and it's really hard to decide (top to bottom in second pic: black canvas Workhorse, dyed bone Great Plainsman, desert ironwood Patriot):

More here.

The Patriot may be a little small for your uses(?), but --depending on handle choice-- is in your price range.

Just as an idea.

Enjoy your search. :)

In order of price my suggestions would be a ka bar Becker bk14 w/ tommy the who scales and a custom sheath, an Esee izula 1 or 2 w/ a custom sheath or a brkt (but that might be a tad over your budget). Good luck.

Check out the Hess Knifework. They have a couple models which might fill your need in the Muley and Whitetail. It's a father and son operation that used to work at Marbles, but started their own shop when production was shipped oversees.

None of which are traditional. :)

Yes, let's keep it to Traditional Knives please.

Marbles went over seas??

That is my understanding. This is why there is such a selection of small knife shops right around Gladstone, MI. You've got Hess, Bark River and Rapid River all within a couple miles of each other. I'm not a Marbles guy, but I was interested in knives produced in that area. My wife's family has property up there and we're up there several times a year. There's literally nothing up there. The main industries for the area are hunting, fishing and paper because there's nothing there but forests and lakes. When I saw that all these great knives were coming out of that area it piqued my curiosity, especially when one of the shops had my last name on it. Perhaps somebody with more Marbles knowledge will pipe in.

Lots of choices in the FB territory; I will throw in the first that comes to mind.
What about a JK E01? He sells them in his subforum here, has great feedback, and the design looks simple and practical.
A sort of all around small (7" overall) fixed blade with a spear point and O1 steel.

I'm going to toss the Buck 118 into consideration - you stated you like Buck's and want a knife bigger than a Bird & Trout (Buck 102) but smaller than a typical woodsman's knife (Buck 105 or 119). The 118 has a full size handle and a decent size blade, carries easy and is big enough for skinning and cutting up a deer, but not too long when you sit down while wearing it on your belt. They aren't made all the time, but are being made right now. Good luck in your quest. OH

Old Hunter... been a Buck fan for a few years now. Have one of their stockman folders and the 112 (I think). Practical and nice to look at. Made in the USA, too.

Hen & Rooster makes a nice line of full tang fixed blades with German stainless (similar to 440B or AUS-8) steel and good leather sheaths for well under $100.
This one in bark ram's horn, but they make the same knife in stag or wood handles. 8-3/8" OAL.

Just checked him out. The Michigan looks super cool, too. I've been a member here at BFC for several years and never checked out the knife maker's forums! Losts of good looking blades!!

I do not have enough personal experience on the matter to support my thoughts, but lately I have been checking some knifemakers who produce and sell FB's here on BF (and the feedback they get), and my idea is that they offer quite alot for their prices.

Or, find a newer custom maker that is trying to get established but does top notch work and buy a custom. Check out the makers market.
