I thought since this is a wilderness forum, some of you might like to see this.

8-1/2" beard, 5/8" spurs, and 18lbs. Not my biggest, but a decent bird.

Congratulations! Nice bird! I didn't get one this year.
I didn't scout properly this year...didn't see where they were roostin'...

 Try slicing up the breast into "chicken fingers". Dip them in eggs and Italian-style bread crumbs and sprinkle with garlic powder. Then fry up with olive oil.
I did this with my bird last year and my kids loved it.

Thats exactly how I cook the breast. My kids love it too, and all the meat gets ate. I use the legs to make turkey jerky, same effect, kids love it and no meat goes to waste.

Nice.

When I was back in PA over Christmas I kept driving past a flock of about 30 birds wandering around the area. PA is going to turn in to prime turkey territory in the coming years. I've never seen more of them around. Mac

And in order to maximize the use of your game, see if there are any primitive skills guys or DIY archery guys around who'd love the wing (preferably) and/or tail feathers for fletching arrows and atlatl darts. A few years ago, I'd almost have to beg, borrow, and steal to get any feathers. I solved the problem by putting up the following poster in a couple of turkey weighing stations.

Also great for tying flies! I just got a stoeger P-350 just for turkey. It's at the gun smith getting tuned. Hopefully I'll be able to get out this weekend for some gobblin' myself.

Nice Pic

They don't come frozen in a plastic bag? Ewwwwww!

I'm in Washington and turkey hunting seems exotic. I have seen wild turkeys on San Juan Island. I don't know if someone introduced wild birds or domestic ones got loose. We came around a bend in the road and one ran across in front of us. We see a lot of Canadian geese, ducks, eagles, and seabrids, but it is really strange to see a bird that big running around on the ground.

Could you catch a turkey without gun or bow in a survival situation? That would make a nice meal!

No man, those things flys and roost on trees at night. Maybe if you climb up and grab it while it's sleeping. I wouldn't want a spur in my face while I'm onto of a tree tho.

What about traps or snares? Could you call one and spear it? I'd love to have SAR find me and offer them a turkey dinner

Hehehe-- for the Canada geese around here, you just need a peice of bread and a stick :D

I wonder if you could spear a duck? Should be easy enough to snare one-- they're pretty clumsy on land. What would be good duck bait?

BTW, what do wild turkeys eat?

I have heard you can trap turkeys in a narrow, slanted trench with bait in the bottom. Supposedly they have a hard time backing up and can only jump a certain distance vertically. If you get them to walk into the trench they can't turn around to walk out and can't jump high enough to jump out.

They say a similar technique works for geese. In their case the trench has to be narrow and only deep enough for them to be able to look out of. They open their wings as they jump. They get in and when they try to get out their wings hit the sides and foul the jump.

I have never seen either of these used but I'd love to try them. Mac

I've heard of people throwing rabbit sticks to the head/neck reigon and taking them that way. It would take some serious skill but with the right amount of patience and practice its feesible.

I'm a primitive guy if anyone wants to get rid of some wings and tails. I need some new fletchings and some wingbones for a call. If you send some wings to me I'll make you a wingbone call. Just pm or e-mail me if anyone's interested.

I missed my bird this year. There's always next year though

How long are the seasons for you guys? Sunday hunts?

We've got so many up here that I think they might start fall hunts at 2008.

I hunt on the Navajo Indian Reservation. They only have one season that's three weeks long for Spring.

Usually state hunts have several seasons from end of March through mid May and they usually have a fall archery season in conjunction with the deer archery season. At least thats what I've found to be that case.
