"Wurst-Case Scenario Causes Police Alert

BERLIN (Reuters) - A man who mistook a salami for an automatic pistol triggered amajor police operation on Friday in southern Germany, involving 10 police cars and a helicopter.

The man alerted police that he had seen three men handling a gun in a car at a motorway service area. Police cars, dogs and a helicopter chased the car and held up the men, only to identify the "weapon" as a salami.

"Behind the dirty windows of the car, the man had mistaken the salami for a gun," a police spokesman in Traunstein said. "The men in the car had probably passed the sausage through the car."

The salami was returned to its owners, he said."

This is what you get when you create a population terrified of weapons and then instruct them to all be on the lookout for anything "suspicious" so that it can be reported to the authorities. (Hmmm spy-on-your-neighbor program kinda sounds like the old USSR)

What happens when somebody gets shot during such monkey business?

Kinda frightening how easy it is to tie up a bunch of police...talk about handing the bad guys the power to create diversions while they plant bombs or whatever.

Is this really a suitable topic for a family-oriented forum? :p

Seriously now, this is another of those stories that would be funny if not for the reality of the mindset it illustrates. :(

Gentlemen,

You are making light of a very serious situation.

A typical German sausage gets over 80% of its calories from fat, and has a LOT of cholesterol. That sausage could, and most likely did, cause someone's arteries to clog, even if just a little. That may have been the dose that kills them, in a couple of decades.

I feel that the police were VERY remiss in releasing criminals of this caliber.

Sorry, but I feel very strongly about this sort of thing.

I'm with Aardvark. I can't believe that ANYONE would make light of this.

In order to prevent a similar catastrophe in this country, I am organizing SCA - Salami Control America. I will start by lobbying my politicians to enact legislation requiring that anyone possessing salami over 6 inches in length be required to be fingerprinted and liscensed. Once the registration process is complete, then we will move on to the SSA - Safe Salami Act, requiring the registered owners to pass mandatory salami safety courses, possess salami locks, etc., then we change the name to the Salami Confiscation Act. I will confiscate the salamis of everyone that I don't like.

Laugh all you want, if it saves one child....:barf: :barf:

Can we be exempt from those restrictions if our salami has "smart" technology?

Two parents called my daughter's school recently complaining that my daughter had threatened to bring a gun to school and shoot their daughters. The school went ballistic. Called our home, but the line was busy so they called my mother (grandma). They filled out reports, called in the principal and reacted quite paranoid. After all, a gun threat by a child in pre school is to be taken seriously.

My daughter is 4 years old and innocently threatened to shoot her friends with her toy squirt gun. The world is run by paranoids. :barf:

When I was in school squirt guns were banned under zero tolerance policies, and a number students were suspended for having squirt guns in their car trunks. Toy guns also fit the ban. My favourite was when a student was suspended for having a baseball bat in his car, despite his protests that it was for an afterschool game with some friends.
