Retirement knives...

I've had a Rat-1, I have three manix 2's, and a PM2.

They are all great knives. The PM2 is the best of the three styles IMHO, but it's 5x as expensive as the Rat-1. I'm not really sure it's 5x as good.

If you go the manix 2 route, I might suggest going with the FRN (blue plastic, I know it looks chintzy, but it really isn't) full flat grind model? Or if they make a standard with a FFG. That grind makes for a wicked slicer and the blade shape is also very conducive to slicing already. (I'm not sure, I haven't shopped that model in a few years). I have the FRN FFG and I really like it. At first I didn't like how cheap it felt, but over time it has grown considerably on me.

If you want someone to say that all of those knives are worth buying, I'll say it. They are. You might not like them, but they are made well.

Might also want to check out zero tolerance. Some of their new stuff is around $200, and IMHO, you'd be hard pressed to get a better made knife at that price point (from a build quality standpoint).

Wow, more great advice. Thanks very much. There is a (standard length) Manix 2 in satin plain edge with SV30 in FFG. That's one that I'm going to try next. Also, I'm going to order a Tenacious, a PM2 and a Rat-1 just to learn what all the exuberance is about. Everyone seems to like them, regardless of how fine their current EDC has become.

Again, many thanks for the tips!
