Retreat Recommendations?

Gosh...you guys are fixated on the 7 miles of water that sits between pain and more pain. Rest assured that getting across that water is not a problem.
Perhaps you misunderstand. I'm not looking at a water taxi. I'm saying learn to live off the ocean and your boat becomes your retreat. Just a different way of looking at things.

Spend more on a house built into the side of the hill, a well inside the house, and fortifications.

You are well protected in this area and the people are all good outdoorsman. I like the elevated area and if you are dug in well enough with provisions, you could last months within your tunnel system and underground bunker. Best of luck. If you buy this place, I get to come up and stay on your land one week next year. I will show you the Ouleout.

Your friends may not be your friends in a SHTF situation. Unless you have been under extreme pressure with them, you do not know how they (or you for that matter) will react. If this is a serious concern, leave now. You have no reasonable or logical escape from Long Island as long as everyone else there is in the same bad situation as you are.

Blow up the three bridges and stay on the island. :)

That's not a helpful solution in case of a hurricane though. :D

I bought land like you want to, built a little log cabin with a chainsaw, and ended up moving there. My place never got broken into, I used to put a note on the door that said something like, "Be careful Bob, I have the boobytraps set." Once my Grandpa and cousins came by and it scared the crap out of 'em. They knew I was a Combat Engineer and knew fully well how to do it.
