Return of the Mudbug

I looks like they’re at least bending the springs and sharpening them in house, according to their release video. The rest looks strikingly similar to their Italian offerings though.

I really like the mudbug. I have an older gec version and would like to pick up another, whether gec made it or not. But I think a lockback D2 Sod Buster for $195 is a bit much. I'd prefer the carbon steel back at $95 per knife, or with inflation/etc maybe up to $130.

I wish them luck as the popularity of the model will probably sell out the run very quickly, but in my view there's a lot of other knives on my wish list for $200.

I want one but that price does make me hesitate. $195 and if you did want the sheath it looks like it may be an extra $38. That’s more than I’ve been willing to spend on one on the secondary so not sure I’d want to spend that on this one. It does look very similar to the make of a Italian Maserin.

The sheath would be useless to me. I'm a lefty
Approx 10% of the population is said to left-handed
Why can't sellers/makers turn out 10% of their sheaths for left side carry?
Or a pocket knife sheath that is at least ambidextrous, because the knife is ... pretty much.
Of course I could have a custom sheath made but by the time I pay that "Lefty" tax, the price point is ridiculous
Their pancake sheath is ambi. You just don’t get the embossed “smith and sons” logo facing out. I bought a couple when I got my first mudbug and they are great open topped slanted sheaths if they haven’t changed them.5F861B20-9533-4915-AABA-4B2B7672AB2F.jpeg

I guess we’ll find out. Sadly, I don’t like the new design nearly as much as the GEC-produced Mudbug, and the price is about $50 more, so this one’s not for me.
Same here. I love the GEC mudbugs but don’t care for the rounded edges of these or the screws. I’m sure they are fine knives.

Who pulled the trigger on a Mudbug today?

I don't like the price but have wanted a Mudbug for quite awhile so went ahead and bought a natural micarta. I still want a GEC made version but I don't see them pop up for sale very often.

I'm in the market for another (2018) Mudbug, but not this version.
I like the original for the quality of build and its shockingly pocket friendly thinness for its size.

This looks very Maserin/Fox to me, and and kind of cheap looking at that.
Then there is that absurdly high price, I'm too cheap to pay $200 for a USA made GEC version, lol.
I didn't like the feel of the micarta on the Maserin Plow I had once, very dry cardboard feeling, and this looks very similar, plus zooming in on the knives online and I don't think fit and finish looks spot on for these either (which it should be for $200).

I'm glad its back though I don't know that I agree with the design choices (modern pivot), but they've been creative in finding a way to make it happen when they couldn't go back to GEC, so kudos for that. Just doesn't make economical sense to me, IDK how they arrived at this price point.

Will be interested to see some more pics and reviews from forum members when these come in.
On a S&S thread on FB, some guys on there said something about GEC having quality control issues with the Mudbug, but I don't recall ever hearing that.

GEC lockbacks are always prone to some wiggle.

I was excited because these were new, but I decided to save my money. Maybe people will really live these when they get in and I’ll get one from the next run, we’ll see.

Looks like you can order the sheath either right handed or left handed when you order the knife.

A great looking knife IMO, but not really my style. I hope everyone here who wanted one was able to get one.
