I agree, about spike length. I shorten them when I modify the CS spike hawk. I try to take into account the arc when the hawk is being used an place the point right on that line. The spike is reshaped so that there is less chance of it getting stuck. I do anneal the hardened portions and then reharden when reshaping is completed. So far I have not had any problem with penetration.
