Spyderco Delica 4
This is my first Spyderco. I thought it was a nice knife to try out and see if I like the Spyderco knives.
Before I bought this I already thought that this was a good knife because it has a VG-10 steel for a good price and I like the looks of this knife. It’s also one of the most sold Spyderco’s so why not try it out yourself?
First thing I do with a knife is handle it on paper and wood. I also carry it for the first two days to see how it feels and I look often to the blade. I thought: ‘ why not bring my camera along and make some pictures of the cutting process so I can let you guys see what I do with it’. I will also write a little review.
Review and my opinion about this knife
Finally, the postman delivered the package from the US. I opened the nice red box and there was my first Spyderco. It looked pretty small so I took it out of the plastic and hold it. It felt very tiny and light but also very solid. The clip is well attached on the handle and the whole handle feels rock solid. It offers a good grip.
I first didn’t like the FRN handle on the pictures but in real time it looks pretty good. This Delica has a real Spyderco blade look with a nice hole, I like that look. Most Spyderco’s have this look, although some don’t.
It’s easy to open the knife with one hand and it went very well the first time. A nice ’click’ and the blade was in place. I love the blade look and then you read: Seki-City Japan and Spyderco VG-10. Sounds good to me, Japan is maybe the best blade making country, they have superb steel and had always the best swords. VG-10 is a good Japanese steel and I always heard good story’s about it. I will write something about the blade’s cutting abilities later.
First I want to tell something about the lock and the blade play. The lock is on the back of the knife and it’s very easy to close the knife. It just needs a little pressure and the blade will snap in place when you close it.
You can see that the lock fits for over 99% on the blade. To assure that I graphed the blade and checked it for any blade play but I can’t find any! Good job there! My first folder with no blade play at all, superb!
Then the most important thing, the blade itself. It is not too big or too small, a good EDC size. Big enough to cut everything you want with an EDC knife. The blade itself looks really strong, it’s pretty thick and you can see that it also has a strong tip. The downside of that strong tip is that it’s not so sharp as other knife tips. I have made a picture of the tip in compare with my Flash-2. I’ve put the tips on my skin and you can feel the difference. So for self defence it’s maybe better to pick something with a sharper point. But we don’t use our knives for self defence of course so in that case the tip is excellent because it probably won’t break without a huge force. You can still put the tip in something, it will go through flesh or something if you want it to, but it’s not a real sharp tip. You can see that because the tip bents and is more a cutting edge. See the picture.
The edge itself is razor sharp. It did a great job on the paper and wood. Although it is sharp, it’s not really sharper than my AUS-8 blades. But VG-10 is a much stronger steel, after I washed it off with some water and dryed it there were no scratches anymore from the wood. The edge is still intact without any damage! The AUS-8 blades have some very small dents on the edge. This VG-10 has no damage so I must say: great job Seki-City!!
The conclusion
Rock solid, superb blade, good price, no blade play, good EDC size. Well IMO the best EDC knife. A knife like the Spyderco Para-Military is also small and would be a great EDC but that is a 100$ + knife. This knife was 45 bucks and has a VG-10 blade. A knife you can carry without worry to much about loosing it. Although you would miss it when you loose it I guess. I’m kind of new in the knives. I always had knives but that were bad 440c knives from a local store. Not a real brand knife.
I don’t know any knife that has a VG-10 blade and that is so solid for this price! The handle is hard and it fits perfect in your pocket. It is small but it also has enough cutting abilities.
I would recommend this knife to anyone who wants a ‘cheap’ good knife.
length overall 7 1/8" (181 mm)
blade length 2 7/8" (73 mm)
blade steel VG-10

weight 2.5 oz (71 g)
hole diameter 1/2" (13 mm)

I hope you guys like the pictures and story. If you agree or disagree let me know, or if you want to ask something. Thanks for reading.
