I was thinking about purchasing a Colt Python because of the ease
of opening people are talking about. I was wondering if anyone had any
insigt on these folders and maybe some advice to a better knife for
a budget of around $35. Thank you.

Hi CRKT,

I saw some of these knives at a local gun/knife/jerky/stun gun show yesterday. The fit and finish are okay, and I like the way the aluminum handle's ergonomics accommodate your hand. It feels quite comfortable. But I found the finish of the handle to be a bit too slick for my liking. And yes, the blade does open smoothly and quickly (please keep in mind that this particular Onion knife is not equipped with the Speed Safe opening mechanism as found on the Kershaw 1500 and 1510 Onion models).

The blade's steel is 420J2, which is a low end grade of stainless. I have not used any knives with this steel, but from what I have read and heard, it is a soft steel. Expect to resharpen frequently, depending on how much the knife is used. It's good that Colt offer the knife is two colors - black and silver. As to carrying the knife around, the ones I saw came with no clips but with a Cordura type sheath. I believe Colt also offers the Pythons with clips too (someone please correct me if I am wrong...)

Overall, a good looking knife for the price, and probably the least expensive collaboration knife available today. Seems to me a good knife for those starting to collect and use knives. Hope this info helps!

Also, one other thing - just remembered that in the November 1998 issue of Tactical Knives magazine, there is a write up about Ken Onion. There is a little aside on the Pythons. Check it out if you have access to back issues of this magazine.
