My wife decided she wanted to provide a review of her EDC as well as show off her PSK (now now Doc - I'm not going to chime in about my RC-6 again)..... The rest of the post are her words...
Hi....This post is from the Mrs. I thought some comments from the perspective of a woman who hasn’t been interested in knives until recently. I’ve always relied on Ken’s EDC for any knife related tasks. With all of Ken’s travels this year I discovered that I actually need my own knife. I’m someone who previously used a paring knife instead of a chef knife for chopping vegetables because I was afraid of the size. In selecting a knife, these were my criteria:
1. I wanted a fixed blade knife because I don’t like opening and closing SAK’s. I also thought a fixed blade would be safer.
2. I wanted the knife to have a handle long enough for a secure grip, but small enough to be lightweight and fit into my psk.
3. I wanted a fun colour that looked more feminine than camouflage or army green. I wanted the knife to look friendly.
4. I wanted the blade to be stiff but not too long and not too heavy.
I chose the Breeden Kat knife. It met the above criteria. It is lightweight, fits my hand and grip perfectly and is in orange. I like the orange because it is a safety color that is easy to spot and it is cheerful. I would have liked to be able to customize the colour a bit more though—perhaps pink, purple or aqua liners, my name engraved or something else “girlie” enough so that Ken wouldn’t use it. Originally I had a difficult time deciding between that knife and the RAT 3. I’m pleased with my choice because I like the size, weight and grip better. The RAT 3 is too large for me for EDC, but I would bring it camping. I think the new Izula RAT is coming out with would also be a good choice for me.
I have found I use my knife more than I ever thought I would. Having a knife made especially for me, in a fun colour and small size allowed me to feel more comfortable and less intimidated to use it. If you are a woman and are thinking of getting your first knife, I encourage you to consider how you will feel about your knife as well as other features (e.g. size, type of steel, etc).
