Review- Microtech Ultratech as user. Update 5/25/23

Congrats! Love the blue and stone wash.

Are gona open it or just use the OEM service?

Anyway, looking forward to hear updates after some hard use.
I figured I’d just use warranty service the first time if needed , I wanted to experience the knife from the viewpoint of a regular purchaser. Plus see how the warranty service turns out, for now anyways. I’ve taken one of these apart in the past, so in the future, I’ll probably just service it myself.

Very satisfying experience imo, such a genious design and great mechanical work.

What will u use for lube? I've been very satisfied with just a quick spray or two of ballistol. Maybe a flush with WD-40 first, but mostly just the ballistol.

When it came time for it I was thinking rem oil and compressed air, But I’ve been considering wd-40 or lighter fluid, something minimalistic.

Remember WD doesnt lube very well. I know it says so on the can, but it's more for cleaning and removing/protecting against rust etc. I tried and had misfires after a short preiod of time.

I dont really know what rem oil is, but if it is really light u're good. I tried regular KPL(I know they have a thinner one specific for OTF's) and that didn't work very well, too thick.

Lighter fluid has always worked well for flushing and does indeed leave a minimal lubricity, which I find ideal. I've also used Rem Oil with good success.

Expect some cleaning, lubing and spring break EDCing an OTF.

If you do this(hard core EDC OTF), you can start of with getting the tool to open the knife and replacement springs cause they WILL BREAK after x amounts of firing.

OTF's r fun but they need more TLC than other EDC knives.

This one is old enough to get a driver's license and has never misfired, had a broken spring, or been disassembled. I don't carry it everyday anymore but it has been carried, used, and opened/closed thousands upon thousands of times. Has maybe been cleaned/sprayed out with Rem Oil two or three times in its life.

Been using the Hogue & Axial as work knives, HVAC, going on 2 years.
They are, without a doubt, the most convenient knives I’ve carried while working.
Both have had the snot beat out of them…….no issues. Little lighter fluid flush occasionally.
Have a bunch of Microtechs & Heretics I EDC……no issues.
I see more OTFs in the OP’s future…….they are in no way toys.

What made you settle on the Axial and Hogue for work and Microtech and Heretic for relaxation? Do they feel more solid, or is it just easier to use them hard since you're risking a lower dollar amount?

Axial & Hogue seem more utilitarian……the MTs are just too sexy for work!

I love OTF's and whenever I buy one and love it, I immediately buy a "backup" convincing myself I'm going to EDC and use the crap out of the original. For some reason, my OCD self never actually uses my knives hard like I thought I would, and I always use my cheap beaters to actually cut stuff for work. :(. I've got to figure out a way to get over my anal retentive mindset and just actually use my nice knives like they were intended to be used.

OTF's are so cool and fidgety . Always look great in movies and video games etc .

For a real life survival , emergency and /or fighting , I'd go with something more "Joe X " approved .

Fixed , Tri-ad or sturdy butterfly lock .

Have been carrying and using exclusively OTFs since the great lockdown of 2020 (which reignited my passion for them). Most of the time, I have been alternating between my UTs. Not once did I experience a misfire from any of them, and they pretty much cover all my daily cutting needs (not babying them either, just blow out the lint whenever I see it piling on the inside). Don't see myself going back to regularly edc'ing a non-OTF folder (although I do sometimes carry one besides my OTF), they are simply too convenient and safe (not to mention fun).
