Review mini grip, skyline and sog flash

I agree the thumb stud hole looks wrong, however, on the mini grip the stud interferes with using the full blade, and it snags on my coin pocket, and it interferes with the grip I use when I open the knife, which is to hold the blade and flip the handle down.. which is also why I carry point down, which is not an option with the pocket clip... bla bla bla..

Im having fun exploring the options.. here is the no clip, no stud iteration..

I received a Split Arrow pocket clip (pictured on $400 the carbon fiber grip on page 1) from Benchmade today, along with a replacement of the stock clip that came on my mini grip. Both clips are the same length.

I had written to complain about the burrs on the stock clip. The replacement stock clip also has burrs, but the Split Arrow clip is nice and smooth, and slightly narrower at the point, than the stock clip.

I highly recommend the Split Arrow pocket clip over the stock Benchmade clip..

I just received a Benchmade pocket clip as used on the Aphid.

It is smaller than the Split Arrow, but the screw hole pattern is not the same, so it only fits my mini Griptilian, if I use just one screw..

Its a nice small clip

A day at the beach.
Still on the fence about the thumb stud. Some days I use it, I like the look. Some days I dont use it, I like the extra 1/4" useable blade length without it.

Nice review! Interesting about the burr issues on the Ritter. Mine is the regular Mini Ritter and I've had no issues with it. As for the pocket clip I put one of STR's denim colored low-rider clips on it. It gets limited EDC time lately as my main EDC has been my Caly3.

you should get some Cuscadi grips for that mini ritter they make almost any material you can dream up

wilkins works great on the mini allows your hand to grip it completely just real pricey.. but if its going to be the only knife you carry everyday then IMO its worth it checkout the you tube videos of the wilkins you can see the size in realtime

A review of 3 popular knives

Cutting fruit and tomatoes, the Griptilian is the worst, it resists slicing, possibly due to the thickness of the blade. It actually crushed the apple, more than it sliced it.

Really? I wouldn't call the griptilian a particularly thick blade.

> Really? I wouldn't call the griptilian a particularly thick blade.

it could be my inconsistent cutting technique, pushing down more with the short blades, and pulling more with the longer blade skyline, or the height of the grip blade, or something else, I dont know the why of it, just the how of it.

see how the grip apple slice has color ridges and the skyline slice does not? The SOG also has ridges, less than the griptillian slice
if you had seen the pieces in real world, it was clear the color pattern you see on the grip slice is caused by crushed apple, not sliced apple

there are other differences, such as the skyline being hollow ground, making it easier to slice with too..
there are other reasons I like the griptilian better, besides how it deals with apples. I really like the handle shape for example. And the overall small size. And the burly construction...

yeah i would never (unless absolutely necessary) cut food with my utility knife id rather use a sanitary kitchen knife than something i cut wood and cardboard with...just my opinion

I've had maybe 10 minigrips. Had a couple off centered blades over the years, but no other trouble. I buy them as gifts usually so that little stuff didn't bother me as if I were going to hold onto it.

I'd pick up that carbon fiber model if it didn't have the stupid black coating on the blade. Benchmade's coatings suck.

As per the Skyline, I've liked the two I've played with, but my neighbor bought one on my recommendation over Christmas and he said that the liner lock required like a herculean effort to close. As far as I know, he's just an isolated situation. I didn't get time to fix it myself for him because he returned it that day and found a Benchmade Ambush somehow. Surprisingly, I'd say the Ambush has similar fit and finish to the minigrip--if you didn't know about steels or the difference between the axis and rolling lock, you'd have no idea the Ambush only cost 50% as much.

I prefer the Storm to the Skyline, although I think the Skyline is a great looking knife. And I'd take the minigrip against all of them you listed, but on the other hand, I'd take a RAM over the minigrip.

I have to get me a third RAM...

yeah but a Ritter grip>ram anyday IMO

The ritter grip obviously blows the ram away for steel, but I actually like the lock and action of the ram a little more, and really prefer the ergonomics/g10 of the ram. Plus it cost about half as much.

But perhaps merely a difference of opinion.

well yeah i love my zdp189 shallot but it cant take a beating like my ritter grip also i changed the grips on it so its much stronger less cheap feeling

i used to carry a diff blade everyday now i pretty much stick with 1-2

the Storm, Shallot and RAM are very tacticool materials and shapes..

Im going the other way, an EDC user with great steel.. like the Fallkniven U1

Im also tempted by the U4, cause I like mini stuff
