Review of HI's Stumpy Bowie

N2S,
That is a sweet 2nd attempt!!:D   I think they got it right on the head. I LOVE big blades. That one almost makes me giddy!
I can't wait to hear of its performance in the field. That should be a true chopping machine. With a great gripping area for two handed hold. Congrats! That is one fine BOWIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

NOT2SHARP I THOUGHT I HAD SEEN IT ALL BUT THAT IS FANTASTIC:D i had to put that in capitals guys, what a sword ?? knife.

you know what not2sharp if i was you i would have a custom sheath made
with the original stubby mistake in a front pocket,i dont think it was a mistake i think they were born to be together. what a fine combination. please tell me yor gonna do it:) it will be a universe buster as a combo. please mate.:)

i like it so much if not2 sharp would do me the honour of allowing a poor near copy of his brilliant design ( :( :)

i would ask uncle bill if its possible i would like to order two almost the same.
wouldant want to spoil this unique item of not2sharps by a copy.
almost same, but 2 in same scabbard, smaller to front, lower down so as to have complete handle clearence for larger. in black leather.
handles horn but carved and finger gripped.:)
again nothing but admiration for this item not2sharp. regards ken

Not only is that scabbard yellow, it's BIG and yellow. I think that it must be the kami's revenge for telling them that they got the first order wrong.

At least with that scabbard folks will be able to find you when you're out in the bush.

I am glad that it finally worked out for you Enrique. I like the yellow sheath personally.

That bush sword would make a good canvas for some etching or blueing. You have one of my HI pieces, you know what I mean. I'll be posting a pic in the next few days of the HI Bowie I etched, and it has the same fuller profile as that monster (when I saw it, I actually thought you took a pic of a regular HI bowie and stretched it with a grafix editor or something).

email me or I'll shoot you one. ksauers@indy.rr.com

Can a very large knife be fashioned to replace a Camper's Ax?

Probably not; the 3-1/2 pound 3/4 sized ax has been with us for a long time. While the hatchet is easy enough to replace with a large camp knife, a 26 inch ax can really take on heavy wood chopping.

That was the question I had in mind when I commissioned Uncle Bill's AK Bowie sword, and Bill Siegle's Behemoth (above). At 26 inches and nearly 5 pounds, Bill Siegles massive bolo knife fashioned from 3/8" 5160, will certainly hit with alot of force behind a sharply recurved edge. The AK Bowie sword is even more massive at 28 inches and 6 pounds. Like the axe, both tools are intended to be used two handed.

Most of the world's military powers issued pioneer swords during the 19th century and onto the early 20th century. Just about every nation issued them artillery troops and other work details where they were used to prepare camps, build battlefield emplacements, and clear fields of fire. Most were designed as oversized hangers/sidearms, heavy machetes, or, heavy bolo knives, and many were issued with massive sawback. There is even a bit of that left in the current m-9 bayonet. None of these designs worked well as sidearms, and while many were somewhat useful as tools, there were probably better tools out there. These were always minor weapons so the quality was seldom there, while the extra weight made them too heavy and slow for single handed use.

I wanted to revisit the old experiment. Only this time, I wanted to go with good quality working knives and a more practical two handed designs. I'll probably test them at some point; I just may need to get a forest first. We can bill it as a battle of the Bills. :D
