Review of Tora Blade

Thank you my friend...fortunately, I did not have to see it. I'm thick headed, but glad to see that I have learned something at least.

All of the older khuks I've seen are thinner and lighter than the HI models although from your AK and a couple of the later HI khuk's I've gotten they have pretty much came back to what the old khuks are so perhaps the days of the heavy weight HI khuk's are over.:)

:( such is sad news for a young'n with a strong back... heck, if i could get a 22" ang at 3/4" id be mighty happy... but they appear to be a rare find on the after market.... i guess one of these days if nothing comes up, i'll just have to put in a custom order... and oh, how ludicrous it will be :D

Trouble is Seth is that young men with strong backs turn into old men with bad backs. :(
I used to throw 50 and 80 pound bags of rubber, ground clay, and other chemicals used for the manufaturing of rubber several feet all day long and thought nothing of it.
After three back surgeries I now wish I had of taken better care of my back when I was younger instead of thinking I had nothing to worry about.
I know several others that will agree with me on that too.
If you're gonna persist in lifting and using heavy objects unnecessarily please learn how to do it properly and then always do it properly.
Might save you a lot of agony down the line somewhen.:D

fair enough :)

though, im not sure even being completely immobile would stop me from wanting that 25" ang khola :D :D somethings are just to cool not to go after... even if you cant use them... ( i will defintely heed your advice about proper lifting (especially when/if i ever get my 25" ang))

now that i have my 12" ang khola, im thinkin to myself "wow... this suites every need i have for a khukurie right now...". that 12" ang... so cute and awesome....

i beleive this is a link to the tora company page? i didnt see one in the rest of the thread, so i thought id find one and post it for those who havent seen them before

I've ordered a custom Mk1 from Tora. It has a full convex edge going back to the fuller and a lefty sheath w/o the karda/chakma compartment. I don't know when to expect it but when it arrives I'll write up a review.

There is good reason for the expression "tough as pine knots."

Pine heavy with pitch is sold as "fatwood" in my part of the world. I seems to originate in the South.

I tried my Tora - a pretty thick example of the breed - on dry red oak in December. It chopped. No apparent damage. I'll bring it and it's Tora "brother" to the Konvention.

Cool. I'll bring mine too. Which model do you have? I really like the looks of their M43 model but I'm afraid to get one after the one I got from them.

Hollowdweller- the one area, beyond construction types- one thin and one thick, is that my blade did not show the same attention to form as does HI. I mentioned the hammer marks. Last night I looked over my HI's. Most of them had wonderful planes and flats. Those that didn't, tended to have fullers, but even the fullers had better lines. Now, as I said, it may be there is less room for 'smoothing' when the metal blade is already so slender. You can't buff out clear through the other side, now can you? Also, I don't know if my blade is representative or not. It was hand picked, though.
It's not as if I care that much about this either- but it is a difference.
So, when you go to the Konvention, look at Thomas's blade and your own: I'd like to know.

You know, we think of HI as heavy duty brutes, but they are very lovely still.

Cool...I didn't know we'd have Tora's coming too...should I set out the good plasticware? ;-)

One was called the "Maharaja" model, although it turned out to be nothing like the famous aluminum-handled private model supplied by the Indian prince to the regiment he rasied in WW I. I don't recall what the other was called. We can give them any name we choose. How about "Ralph" and "Tony"? :D

I posted a review. The one I tested on red oak chopped OK, but I seldom test tools to the limit. The fit and finish was OK, if somewhat under than my non-blem HI's.

"Plastic ware"? I was hoping for purest SS. ;)

Hmmm...better add that to your packing list Tom!

This is important;

Tora (Simon-owner) has stated in The British Blades forum and his own that cutting substantial trees down is not what Tora blades are made to do. I believe he is suggesting that though passing my test is great, it is not the everyday work for his blades.

Clearing brush and small saplings, making a shelter, killing animals and butchering- these are more in line with Tora everyday use.

Hi Munk,

I've been away for a few days in Germany, so many threads to catch up on!! Just wanted to say thank you for a very well written review which was unbiased and honest. Great review, and thanks for taking the time to put the kuk to your tests.

Cheers

Leanne ;)
