Review request: Firestone Beltaxe

Well, for $165 US I would want something hand forged, scrimshawed and autographed by the maker. The only cast hatchet I ever had I received in pre-Cub Scout days (before color t.v., even) and it soon broke. On the other hand, investment cast can be pretty good stuff; just ask Ruger.

Keep thinking I've read a review of this before. Hopefully by Steven Dick, who is the ax expert at TK. Will look thru my past issues.

I also remember reading about this ax in TK. Seemed like they liked it...but they always do...

Have you noticed that time flies like the wind, but fruit flies like bananas ?

Saw that thing on "Everything Outdoors", one of those TNN weekend shows. They also liked it, but then again, they always do. Anybody who puts up something for their show always gets some shpiel about how great the thing is for the outdoorsman. They could have a porta-potty with a spiked seat, and they would rave about how the spikes kept lazy campers from reading their magazines on the can.

He went on to cut up a potato with the hatchet and toss it into a frying pan. I have never messed with one, but I would venture to guess that with $165 you could do one heck of alot better.

Sometimes I catch myself assuming that everybody knows their way around a pocket knife. Then I remember what the first three letters of "assume" are.

Hey guys,

The price is $165.00 CDN at Lee Valley, at least that's what my catalog says. I've seen it on the net for about $90 USD. Hope that helps someone.

Just to let everyone know, I got one of these belt axes a few months ago and love it! It fits great in my hand, and has a fairly good edge from the factory. It balances well, and is substantial enough for good cuts.

I got mine from South Summit for about ninety dollars. I think it's a great value for the money. Here is the site...http://www.southsummit.com/Belt%20Axe.htm

Hope this helps.

I don't think there is much competition out there for the Firestone, Dennis. Steven Dick, and I believe Ron Hood, are real fans of the Swedish Granfors Bruck (sp?) axes and hatchets. They are pretty spendy, but I don't think so high as the Firestone. Am fairly sure they're forged, too.

Sorry, have no idea who carries them. I'll do a search in a bit and see what I can find.

I don't see cast 440C stainless as an obvious choice to make an axe head out of as it has a low impact toughness. Yes it has a nice wear resistance, but I would prefer even 440A. In regards to the Gransfors Bruks axes, yes, they are of high quality, I have also been recommended the Wetterling axes they are about half the price of the Gransfors Bruks blades. I think I'll pick up one in the next few months. You can see them here :
