Company - Survival Sheath Systems
Owner - Robert Humelbaugh

This is yet another negative review of the company Survival Sheath Systems. I few years ago, I ordered six items from them, paid for them, and then received only two of the items almost a year later. After literally years of back and forth, dodging my phone calls, dodging my emails, and stringing me along, I finally got an email apology of sorts from Mr. Humelbaugh, but no attempt or commitment to refund my money or ship the remaining four items. Now, I have seen others have had similar difficulties and this appears to be a pattern of behavior. He takes people's money and then goes off the rails, never shipping the products. I suppose those that bother to post complaints are just the tip of the iceburg and that Mr. Humelbaugh might be making lots of money charging for orders he never ships? Might I suggest that this pattern of behavior displays either criminal intent to defraud or else mental illness.

Anyway, I like his design and products. He seems like a good guy. I recommend his workmanship if you're lucky enough for him to ship your order to you without just keeping/stealing your money.

i had a bad run with him many years ago. just forgot, so he says, to make and send my sheath. he did eventually send me the sheath and quality was good but took a long time over a year or more if i remember.

Right, that seems to be the story from many who bother to voice their complaints: they eventually got what they ordered after long waits and communications. I never did.

The problem, and the reason I decided to post my experience, is that a typical criminal ploy in a putative billing scam is to delay and see who goes away and then service only the persistent squeaky hinge after more delays and aggravation. That way, the criminal gets to keep a large share of the billing scam, the share from those who simply gave up, while delaying service for the rest during the wait.

If the number of complaints, combined with the number of begrudging satisfied customers is any indication, I fear that may be what is going on here.

At best, anyone contemplating an order must take into consideration the very real possibility that they will be charged up front and then be jerked around for a year or more until he keeps there money, or until it finally arrives, and then only after they have complained sufficiently and persistently enough to show they're not going to go away. That's a hell of a way to get a sheath!

i hear ya. i don't know. i do know it took forever and lots of urging to get it. i'm not a nasty attacker type, i just don't go away.

course that was long ago and Robert or whatever his name is, might have changed from trying to fill orders to not trying anymore? i just don't really know. at one time i said i'd use him again even with the bad results.....but there are far too many good makers on here, and i changed my mind couple of years ago.

but here is one of the more recent threads about issues and RedDev posted a whole list of threads like it, a handful of posts down.

good luck hope you get your stuff or your money.

^wow.....got to be a record. darn shame too, he refuses to make good.

Yep, you see I appear in the jbmonkey posted above, it was the issues around the delivery of my sheath from Robert that got me to join BF in the first place (his forum was still active then). I truly don't understand how he is still in business and taking people's money !!!! His DOES make a nice sheath when it is done but NO nicer (and certainly not as a nice as some) than many of the well known and respected makers such as Dave Brown, Al Welke and Eric Lind that frequent these forums day in and day out.

Exactly. How is he still in business and taking people's money? One would think that the credit card companies would be refusing to service his account, or that his local police would have gotten involved with investigating a complaint or two. Maybe the credit card companies don't care much and his local police probably don't see a big enough felony to justify flying in out-of-state witnesses for a trial.

I thought for sure I would be one of the unlucky few who got swindled before it all fell apart. But he's still up and running?

What's ironic is that a self professed /outdoorsman/survivalist/prepper seems to be alienating the whole outdoorsman/survivalist/prepper community. One would think that would be the last or second to last group that one would want to alienate if one were a prepper!

I imagine there will be fewer friendly faces on his post-apocalyptic road.

I believe he does his serious business with manufacturers, sheathing knives coming off the production line. If so, he should spare s lot of good people the trouble and stop taking individual orders.

"I believe he does his serious business with manufacturers"

His other serious business is stealing.

I bought 2 sheaths from Robert, some years ago, both on separate occasions. The first order was more delayed than expected, so I called Mastercard, and asked them to look into the matter. He sent the sheath, shortly after my call, so I imagine he was aware of my complaint. The second sheath arrived more or less within the expected time, without a hitch. He is an interesting person to chat with, and perhaps the personal communication gives him a reason to prioritize the order. I like the quality of his work, but I would still be hesitant to place another order, because of his poor track record on the forums.

Most credit card companies have timeframe limitations to file a dispute. I'm sure he is aware of that fact, that by the time the customers figure out they are being screwed its to late to file a dispute.

Just a lesson, do not pay up front. If you do, at least file a dispute before the time runs out, no matter what line of crap the maker gives you.

Unfortunately I came across this thread to late. Hopefully he makes good on my order.
Ancient thread, lol. Well, I'm assuming you paid PayPal and or via credit card, just remember your time limits for filing a claim. Don't know what his current wait or backlog may be but check in with him and see if he is at least responsive

Thanks for the info.

Given the paragraph above, that has to be one of the most incongruous endorsements I have ever read in my life...
Did two people write this post, or do you have some sort of multiple personality disorder?
