Reviews for this hawk?

First, welcome to bladeforums! You'll find a wealth of information here. Now, let me disseminate some. Haha.

If it says "cast", don't buy it. There are very few good examples (proper heat treating, etc...) of cast tomahawk heads out there. For $10-20 more you could get yourself a good hand-forged tomahawk from any of the makers here on this website.

You say (If it says "cast", don't buy it)......

What about the Allan Foundry:

Allan Foundry 'hawks are cast in America from tough cutlery grade 410 steel. They are exceptionally clean castings.

& Slasinski Foundry Hawks?

They are castings of 4140 steel, which results in a very tough 'hawk for throwing, but one which will still hold something of an edge for other work.

What do you think about this statements :

(Drop forging involves the use of dies and massive power hammers. The result is more consistent than hand forging (but not as consistent as the castings shown above). This is an advantage when buying axes in matched sets for throwing.)

I know nothing about tomahawk & axe making i just want to learn.

(infos are from ragweed forge catalog)

thanks!

What type of steel is " a steel alloy" ?? Do you want a hawk that will only hold "something of an edge" ?? When they talk about castings being more consistent than drop forging, what they are talking about is the details in the shape of the head, such as chevrons or grooves. It is in no way talking about the quality of the steel or it's properties. I would typically stay away from cast hawks as users, although there may be some good ones out there. As far as 410 steel, it won't keep an edge if you try any chopping with it. Also "clean casting" only means that you have a smooth surface without the typical crappy appearance that casting usually leaves you with. I guess what I'm saying is stay away from cast hawks if you expect it to perform any duties other than being thrown at a rotten log..

but i had already made an order for two slasinski hammer hawk...

maybe i'll made a review once they will get used.

i think i'll mostly thrown them.

i have a Gransfors Bruks, a Wetterlings & a Iltis ox head for other duties.

Yes, thanks in deed rocketmann. You pointed out what I would have said, but in a much better fashion since you have a more intimate working knowledge of metallurgy.

V, hope you're not disappointed with the hawks you bought. If anything, they should be ok throwers, so not a bad idea relegating them to that task.

Neph, hope it helped you make a good decision. Let us know if there's anything else you need. There's always someone friendly around here to answer a question or three.

Finally i changed my order of 2 cast tomahawks for 2 drop forged hawks.1 cs frontier hawk & one trail hawk

I hope i made a good choice.

thanks guys
