Hi guys.

I am hoping to get a chance to try my hand at making my 1st knife this fall and I am working on the design over the summer.

I want to make a skinner and I have finally come up with something that I like and hope to get feedback from the more experienced on it.

Here is the sketch:

Did you notice that the lanyard hole forms a smiley face with the pins? Was that intentional? Kinda looks like a teenage mutant ninja turtle smiling big...

I like it. Nicely balaced and it looks like it will work well.

If it were me I would have the slabs cover the whole tang, but that is my opinion.

My favorite part.....

LOL!

most definate cover the whole tang area. THat finger cut out will be brutal with use unless its wider with handle material.

Id forget the whole half hole in the butt end and use a thong hole tube.

NIce start though!!!!

id also make the handle about 5/8" longer. Maybe 9" overall. Try cutting the pattern out from a frozen pizza box to get a feel for it :)

The only thing I would add is. That recurve blade is gonna be a little difficult for a first knife.

Other than that what everybody else has said is good advice

Nick:)

I have to agree with the make the scales cover the whole tang. I really like the look of the knife other wise.

Now from a new makers pespective, it looks like it may be hard to get the re curved edge and straight grind line on the top. I looked at all the re curves I own and the grind line mirrors the edge

If it is truly to be used as a skinner, then the sharpened false edge may be a problem.

The finger groove is pretty distinct and may interfere with alternate grip holds.

I don't like the spine divot , but that is personal preference.

I like it. It might be more than I would want to attempt as a first knife though.

Thanks for all of the great feedback.

There are some very good points (pardon the pun) I will post revisions as soon as I can.

Thanks again for all of the help gang!

Steve

My advise (for whatever good my advise is) is to not fuss so much about the design and just make it. Everyone has their own feeling about what a knife should look like and what it should feel like. You will learn more about how you did and what you should do next time from making your first knife (whatever it looks like) than you will from all the feedback in the world from other people who may have different opinions about what a knife should be.
Others may feel differently.

Please check the beginning of the thread for the most recent version.

Thanks!

Steve

I like your first design better. It shows some originality that I feel has been watered down in the subsequent revision. It will be a real PITA to grind for a first knife... what with the recurve, curved primary bevel and the swedge... but I say go with your original instincts.

this is more of what I was talking about in the way of the grind line.

I liked the swedge on the top and the organic flowing lines of your design I just think that the straight top grind line would be hard to achieve. I felt that the partial scales could be uncomfortable, but looked really good. In the long run it is your knife and you are the one that has to be happy with it not us. I am a noob myself so I was just going from what I have learned I am capable of doing right now

LOL

I mapped it out in CAD last night, newest version looks almost just like that!

Thanks for all of the feedback guys!

Steve

If you are going to use CAD software, be sure to use something with NURBS (Non Uniform rational B Splines) it will allow you to keep the more natural lines. Most CAD programs tend to leave things jagged and not natural looking.

See I heard that before but never had a problem with it since the drawing is just a basic layout for me. The shape is "tweaked" as I build the knife.

Great first drawing by the way. Love it!
