Looks like a Model 60 to me. The model number should be engraved under the cylinder hinge, visible with the cylinder open.

I got a new M 60 last year and it looks very similar. Mine had a different front sight and stocks, but otherwise the same.

Happy to help!

I think I gave around $600 for mine last year (2 years maybe, I'm starting to lose track of time). Gallery of Guns got a huge batch of 38 cal model 60s (its confusing because the 60 also comes in 357 mag) and I got my dealer to order me one. MSRP is 729, I just checked for ya!

good carry revolver?

Yes it is. It's heavy tho. I usually pocket carry and prefer the lighter weight of my Model 638. However, the 60 is easier to shoot well, and I carry it around the farm quite a bit. I actually ended up with a 686+ because I liked the stainless 60 so much.

I recently moved from an urban area to a rural one and am trying out the 60 on my belt. Not really used to that yet, I might need a better holster than the galco I'm using.

When I got the 60, I intended for it to be my main carry gun but because of the weight pulling down my pants pocket it didn't turn out that way.

Around the farm lately I've been toting my M351PD a very lightweight 22 mag revolver that holds 7 rounds. Handy for lots of "farm stuff", haha.

I really wish I could post pics, then I would be helpful, lol.

There are a few different numbers scattered around a S&W. I think your guy is looking on the part that "swings out", those 3 numbers are not the model #. They are essentially a part # and really mean nothing to the consumer. The model # will be just opposite of that on the gun frame. My new 60 is labeled 60-16 and above that # will be the serial # (which will be 3 letters followed by 4 numbers). The serial number will also be stamped on the bottom of the grip frame.

I double checked and couldn't find a Model 588 on the S&W website, sometimes I have a brainfart, but I think I'm steering you right I hope.

You'll need better photos with the cylinder open for any kind of an ID.

Thanks guys I relayed this to him so he could look again, my suspense is now growing, I still suspect its a model 60

5 shots, stainless frame, exposed hammer, all clues point to you being correct.

ETA: It looks like someone has installed a big white dot front sight, which I think is a pretty swell upgrade.

Alright, Model 60 it is, he wants to trade it for a sig 320 subcompact, choices choices, i know those grips aren't cheap and I gave 500 for my setup

does yours have rear sights or that trench sight rear like that one?

Just the trench. Back when I belonged to a range, I got some sweet groups at 7 yards, and it shot the vast majority of ammo I tried very well.

S&W makes a model 60 with adjustable rear sights and a 3 inch barrel that I've been meaning to acquire...in fact, that's how I ended up with the snubnose model, my dealer sold the 3 incher before I got enough cabbage saved up.

As someone who loves revolvers and traded his Glock 42 for a S&W 638, I think that sounds like a good trade for you, provided the revolver's lockup and timing and all that jazz is up to snuff.

i decided to pass on it, this guy really knows nothing at all about the guns history, rounds through it or really anything else about it. I don't want to chance getting one thats been ran hard with 357. Thanks for all the input kite, I know who to ask about revolvers now.
