Reworking 1055?

I am going to purchase a CS GI Tanto. I do not like the top integral guard. How can I remove this?
Will I screw up the temper?

It is too tough a knife to pass.

You can file or cut it off with hand tools, with an angle grinder if you go slow and keep it cool. You could also use a dremel cut off wheel.
