Hi all,

* I will not be able to commission a knife for more than $50, and would greatly prefer less. It's only fair to put that out in the open first before either of us wastes time. I believe your skills are valuable and worth the money you ask for them, therefore, it is my intent to be flexible in my requirements to bring the cost into my range.

What I am looking for is similar to the farrier knife Mora sells or the R Murphy shop knife, but in reduced dimensions. Ideally, I'd be able to tuck this knife into my pocket and have it appear to a casual observer to be a thick pen. I need something with enough finish to not look like I'm carrying a shiv, but little enough so as not to be ostentatious - the two extremes that would draw attention to it. I'm tossing around the idea of capping it with a pen or marker cap to clip it in pocket and avoid the need for a sheath.

My intended use is shop and utility cutting, with the potential for occasional whittling if the mood strikes. Nothing terribly abusive like prying or batoning, but I wouldn't be averse to a thicker stock material - just in case. I'd like to have a higher carbon content than the standard stainless steels found in lower end pocket knives I'm used to. Obviously, I'm not expecting rare metals for my price range, just better than soft.

Exact requirements: 1.5" Flat edged plain sheepsfoot blade. 4.5" overall length. Non stainless. Around 5/8" tang width. I'll take any grind but hollow - whatever requires the least investment of your time, balanced against the stock thickness.

I'm very open to any advice ("I tried that and it didn't work", etc) and again, willing to bend to bring cost down, including taking an unfinished product from blade blank on up.

If anyone can help me out or supply feedback, I'd greatly appreciate it. I've seen some fantastic work on these forums, I just wish I could afford more of it.

Thanks for your time,

himself
