RH Russell Belt Knife

I agree, jdk1. In fact, I plan on cleaning it up and sending good pictures of both sides and trying again from a different email address to see if I get a different answer.

I'd take that information Grohmann from with a grain of salt. There is no guarantee that the information the customer service people provided is correct. For instance, original older knives I've seen are marked RD1958, not 1957 and have brass rivets. If they got that wrong, you got to wonder about the rest.....and the information from the Grohmann website in the link posted above by jdk1 contradicts what the service people sent you.....Although, if the picture posted above is the knife in question the sheath is wrong for a very early knife. The sheaths were originally molded individually by hand to fit each knife, not a generic wrap around pouch.

Okay, just a follow-up and question: I refinished the handle scales. Sanded the blade to 800 grit and hand polished it. Now I'm trying to decide whether I want to keep it polished or do a micro-scratch finish with a red Scotch-brite pad like I do most of my knives. I've always veered away from highly polished blades because they will eventually scratch. Easier to repair irritating scratches on a scratched finish blade than polished. Any opinions?

Give me some guidance here. If it would be blasphemous to put a fine-scratch surface on the blade, just say so. It certainly wasn't that way when I got it................but it wasn't mirror polished either! I'll be sure and post some pics when I get it finished.

Either should be fine. You already polished the blade, so its not like it'll effect collector value. I think a brushed finish would be good for a user.

Okay, as promised, here's a picture of the DHRussell Belt Knife.

Well, to be honest, I hate polished blades on the knives I make and sell. I typically take a maroon (red) scratch pad and put a nice even scratched patina on them. I think I'll do the same with this one. They actually look better if I polish them first and then put the scratch pattern on them. Don't ask me why, but I've done it without polishing and with and polishing first just looks better.

Oh, and I sent this picture to Grohmann from a different email account to see what information they could give me on the knife. Will be interesting to see if it differs from the original picture I sent.

Looks very similar to mine (well, mine has a gray patina), with nickle silver rivets. I have the military style case with the flap. Also drilled a lanyard hole in the butt. Love the rosewood grip.

The picture doesn't show it because of the danged reflections, but my rivets are brass. Thanks, yes the Rosewood refinish job turned out really nice I thought.

Well, disappointing to say the least, here is the response for info on the knife from Grohmann. They actually gave less information than the first time I sent them a picture. Oh well, I'm happy with the knife.

Good day

Thank you for your inquiry. Yes that is a #1 knife, you can read more about it on the website at www.gknives.com There is no way to date the knives as they are not marked with serial numbers etc. but it looks in great shape! Have a great day.

best regards,
