First, let me say that my background was primarily in the Collision Industry and that I prepared and painted my first vehicle almost 52 years ago. I never used anything for hand sanding all those years except 3M Wet/Dry paper in various grits.

When I started making knives, naturally, I stayed with (what I thought to be) a proven product.

Well, after a few years of hearing about the Rhynowet Red Line, I finally broke down and ordered 50 sheets each of 220, 400, 600, 1000, and 1500 grit.

After progressing through those grits on my latest knife, I must say...... WOW, where was my head all those years?

I am very impressed with the uniform scratch patterns obtained with these papers and they seem to last just as long as the 3M at a little over half the cost.

Thanks to everyone who has recommended this paper.

That is all....... Robert

I have recently switched to the Rhynowet red ine sand paper. I am very impressed with it. I also would like to thank those who recomended it.

Glad you like it Robert! It is definitely my favorite among all the papers I have tried. The only thing that will outlast Rhyno on my 9" disc sanders is ceramic PSA discs, but they are ~$4 a pop versus 45 cents... The ceramic discs sure don't last 7-8 times as long.

I'm working on a 9" damascus fighter right now. I rough ground to 50X and knocked any burrs off with a 120X j-flex. After ht, I ground it down close to sharp with the same 50X belt.

Then went to the 9" disc with 120X Rhyno, then 320X, then 500X, and hand sanded with 500X.

So instead of $25-45 worth of belts for this blade, I have one $8 belt, and 3 or 4 sheets of $0.45 each paper!!!

The cut-off scraps from the 500X disc were almost enough to get the blade totally hand finished.

Burt Foster turned me onto the stuff, and I'm sure glad he did!!! :)

Can you PM me your source as google doesn't have a whole lot of options. One retailer is $50 for an unspecified amount of sheets in one grit, another is $22 for 1/2 sheets. Thanks in advance!

I love this stuff. Saves me a lot of frustration, because I used to try using the stuff at Ace Hardware.

Super grit sent me a sample of another brand with a similar type to Rhynowet with my Rhynowet recent order. It seems to be every bit as good and at about 1/2 the price I was told. I'm ordering more Rhynowet grit sizes tomorrow and will get some of the new brand to try. I will post if it gives the same great results. Frank

I daresay that the basic 3M "body-work" stuff (220-1000 grit) is pretty good, but it's not made for picky folks like us. A fellow re-painting a car simply doesn't need the same surface finish we demand.

I've been using Klingspor wet/dry papers from Pops lately, and like it a lot better. Next time I order some, I'll try the Rhynowet and compare.

I will also say that the high-end 3M polishing papers (2000 grit and above) are pretty good. They are made for picky rascals like us. Norton makes some really good papers too, but you have to shop around.

When I first tried it compared to the 3M I thought it to be coarser. I will say this, I have not used any paper that holds up as well, and lately when using 320 instead of just water as lube I tried glue based buffing
compound melted in water to get the slurry going FAST. Provided the grinds are up to snuff in the
first place it makes short work of hand sanding.

Thanks Frank, looking forward to the results.

Well, I did order but they told me the piece I received was a "1/3" sheet full size sample probably made for those small power sanders. The Rynowet certainly has worked very well for me, so I don't have any problems having to stay with using it. Frank
