Rhynowet Sand Paper - SiC or AO?

Heyo,

I'm getting to the point where I'm going to buy some paper for hand sanding. I've stumbled upon Rhynowet which everyone seems to be happy with them.

They sell a silicon carbide version, and a RedLine aluminum oxide one. Both around the same price.

Which one would be a wiser choice for me? I will probably use them for both the blades and handles. Or does it really not matter?

Hi. I just ordered some from a mail order house (meaning i called up and spoke to a human being) and got a better price.

My understanding is that the paper uses AO up to 320 grit and SC above that, but I see they also offer SC in some lower grits on one of your links.

Anyway, bear in mind you'll be adding shipping costs, so you might consider bulking up your order to reduce the additional cost per sheet.

Do you think it's worth skipping 500 grit between 400 and 600? Seems like a waste of time when they're so close.
 
This stuff is excellent. Best paper I've used to date (on more than just knives).

I go from 120 to 180 to 240 to 400 t0 600 to (sometimes 800) to 1000 to 1500 to 2000 to 2500 (if mirror polishing)...
 
For the extra $22 I don't mind putting the 1200 in there, but the 500 seemed a bit redundant. Thanks for the opinions! Now to wait on their reply and see if they ship to Canada :/

I recently ordered from them 4,6,8,1000,2000,2500 and a roll of 120grit shop roll came to just over $150 shipped. but had to pay an additional $15 customs charge at the PO when it arrived but yes they do ship to canada
 
It is truly excellent paper. I ordered 120,280,400,800,1000,1500 and 2500. I got lucky and missed out on the customs ding, pretty fast from them too :thumbup:
 
Just a note of warning: if you buy it, be sure to get a lot of 120. I go through that faster than any of the other stuff, easily.
 
Thank you cutting edge, I appreciate the Canuckian advice. I am going to order 120 to 2500 skipping 500.. but boxes of 50 sheets each.. so its goign to be around $250 before shipping. Plus customs if they ding me.. usually they don't but sometimes. That's okay though. Also Thank you TheGeek for the 120 grit warning.. I HOPE to not hand sand at 120.. I plan to just belt finish to 400 and see how well it looks when I start hand sanding.. and if lines start showing up I'll know where I went wrong and how far back I need to start hand sanding at. But with some luck I can start at finer grits. I will take your advice and get extra 120 though!

It looks like they only accept Credit cards, not Paypal.. so I have to load up a prepaid and do it that way. Anyway, once I get this stuff i can begin the annoying job of hand sanding blades :P
 
Yes it may be a lot to drop on sandpaper... but if you think about it, you are getting them for ~$0.45 a sheet. You will pay at least double that for wet/dry at most places in canada
 
Oh yeah, I forgot. All you wimps use grinders. If you were real men, you would use files like my and trypp..... oh wait. I think I'm going to go cry in the corner now.

I use it in the finer grits, as i only hand sand at 400 and up, but this stuff is pretty amazing. And the 1000 and up seem to last forever, especially if you soak it for a few minutes prior to use.
 
That's a good tip Mike, I will try soaking them! I've only used sandpaper on handles so far, and tend to just keep the water running in the sink and slosh it under there to clean it off a bit every little while. But that's not really a good idea with wooden handles, I've found.
wolffbite it is indeed a good deal, and for the amount I expect to use it, it should last me a long time. That said, I may end up liking the look of hand sanding or the "legitimacy" of the finish, and use it more.. I am very curious to see if I have left any scratches behind from the grinder once I start; I spent a fair bit of time on 220 and so I don't think I should have to hand sand lower than that.. but we'll see :P
 
After watching Nick Wheeler's video I also switched. I used Klingspor before which was good but rhynowet seems to last a little longer for me. I use it on my disc, for hand sanding and on all my handles.

Greg, so you called them and ASKED for a better price or by calling they just gave you a lower price? Did you ask them to beat a competitors price? I am going to be ordering soon, just curious.

Thanks numbers. I was hand sanding on granite with Redline for the first time yesterday, and I can't believe how well it cuts. 100% better than anything I have used before.
