Alright, been afraid to ask, but is the ricasso the blunt part of the knife just to the handle side of the business end?:confused: I am having a little trouble figuring out how to keep the edge just right towards the handle end(ricasso?). Biggest trouble is directional files. Any suggestions?

The "Ricasso" is the flat area just in front of the guard. It makes a perfect place to put the makers name.
I believe you are talking about what we call the "plunge" where the bevels drop off from the ricasso. Most people use a round file there. Did this answer your question?
