The boys and I did a road trip a few months ago to the southern part of Namibia and then crossed into the North West Cape province in South Africa, visiting the only mountain desert south of the Equator in Africa, called the Richtersveldt ....some random images here. (Nikon D300 with 18-200 VR Nikor lens)
A weaver bird colony .....in this nest lives anywhere from a few hunderd to 3 thousand birds. The nest entrances are seperate and enters from the bottom, so predators cannot get in ....... however, be careful as small chicks fall out regularly so the cobra's & puff adders are never far away for an easy meal ...however, not nearly as dangerous as Les Stroud made it out to be ....but don't sleep under the nest as bird lice live there. The young man is my youngest son, Ryan, aged 11 and no, he is behind the nest and not under it. You make that mistake only once
Sunset over the Namib desert in Southern Namibia, close to the Fish River Canyon, second only to the Grand Canyon in size. Start of canyon can be seen in fore ground.
The transport used though the desert. A Defender 110 that belongs to my buddy Fred and my LR3, named a Discovery in SA.
Abandoned truck in Namibia. Left there to slowly rust away since early 1940's ... still some years to go.
The Gariep river ....border between Namibia and South Africa so left of picture is SA and across the river on the right hand side is Namibia.
Convoy on way to Richtersveldt ... this is harsh desert terrain. Note second spare on roofrack.
A quiver tree in the Richtersveldt. Bushmen made quivers from the tree as it is filled with a soft water logged pulp, easily removed to form a hollow tube, hence the name.
This is the plato in the Richetersveldt. Beautiful but barren.
