The boys and I did a road trip a few months ago to the southern part of Namibia and then crossed into the North West Cape province in South Africa, visiting the only mountain desert south of the Equator in Africa, called the Richtersveldt ....some random images here. (Nikon D300 with 18-200 VR Nikor lens)

A weaver bird colony .....in this nest lives anywhere from a few hunderd to 3 thousand birds. The nest entrances are seperate and enters from the bottom, so predators cannot get in ....... however, be careful as small chicks fall out regularly so the cobra's & puff adders are never far away for an easy meal ...however, not nearly as dangerous as Les Stroud made it out to be ....but don't sleep under the nest as bird lice live there. The young man is my youngest son, Ryan, aged 11 and no, he is behind the nest and not under it. You make that mistake only once ;)

Sunset over the Namib desert in Southern Namibia, close to the Fish River Canyon, second only to the Grand Canyon in size. Start of canyon can be seen in fore ground.

The transport used though the desert. A Defender 110 that belongs to my buddy Fred and my LR3, named a Discovery in SA.

Abandoned truck in Namibia. Left there to slowly rust away since early 1940's ... still some years to go.

The Gariep river ....border between Namibia and South Africa so left of picture is SA and across the river on the right hand side is Namibia.

Convoy on way to Richtersveldt ... this is harsh desert terrain. Note second spare on roofrack.

A quiver tree in the Richtersveldt. Bushmen made quivers from the tree as it is filled with a soft water logged pulp, easily removed to form a hollow tube, hence the name.

This is the plato in the Richetersveldt. Beautiful but barren.

Nice pics! I sure hope I make it to Africa someday!

Great pictures...Just breathtaking. I love Africas landscape. I hope to visit there someday.

Great pics. I love those defenders. Perhaps my favorite vehicle.

Excellent pictures - were you hiking about when your convoy passed you by???
Thanks for sharing your adventures!

I think I would flip out in joy if I was there.

Awesome terrain, looks like something I would enjoy. What happens when you walk under one of the nests? Do the birds do something, or the lice? Or is it the snakes?

I am a bad traveller ..... we stop often when I see things and then explain it too the kids. The one with the short fat shrub in front is a Bushman candle tree .... if you pick a branch it burns like a candle but the trick is to get a dark grey one ...... a dead one or the flame has a black sooth that burns your eyes.

Did warn the kids .....you will get no money when I die but I will leave you with millions of memories ;)

The lice drop on you and cause a nasty itch and rash ...so avoid if possible to walk or sit underneath ...not to mention that a hundred of birds generate a load of poop :D

The cobras try and get into the nest so as long don't touch ... no danger. The puff adder is a lazy SOB that just lies on the ground and wait for a meal to drop out of the nest ...they will not move out of the way even if you approach and have been confirmed as the fastest strike in the world ..... massive dose of toxin through 2 inch fangs and man, the start of a really bad day.

The birds are harmless if busy ;)

wow.. awesome shots Aubrey... Africa is such an amazing place.. i would love to get there one of these days...
