Uncloe alan  A country lad

Now,I found one of Patsy's smokes in my pack . You don't believe ? I do

Still a country lad

Brownies can't read. Patsy got out a cigarette and then something distracted her so she didn't smoke it and didn't put it back in the pack -- just left it for the brownie to put away. The brownie did the best she could.

Put out a saucer of milk for her every night -- and don't try to spy on her. Brownies are shy.

One night while falling off to sleep, I had a vision above my bed, a large blob of an apparition, breathing heavy and pressing on my chest, making it hard for me to breathe. It was like mocking me in my struggled breath. I stood up in my bed, and said out loud, "in the name of Jesus Christ my savior get out of my house." The thing deflated and left before I even said the name Christ. It was not a dream, quite freaky, and very real. It freaked my wife out. She did not see it, but she heard a whoosh sound, and as well as me shouting.

Not gonna get into a religious discussion, but thought I'd offer you an alternate explanation, as I go through this constantly.

As you drift off to sleep (or come out of it), you go into hypnagogia, and you're body starts entering into sleep paralysis. Sleep paralysis is what keeps you from acting out your dreams. Hypnagogia can induce hallucinations. Everyone goes through both, it's just that most of the time, you don't notice either.

Occasionally, you'll wake up and either one or both are still in effect (full or diminished). Waking up in sleep paralysis leaves one unable to move for a short time and has the feeling of something heavy on your chest and the inability to breath. You actually are breathing normally, it's just that you can't tell it and it feels shallow (in the case that you're not actually breathing, you have sleep apnea which is likely the cause of waking up in the first place). A whooshing sound and the vanishing can be attributed to your body waking up and you sucking in a deep breath. Waking up in hypnagogia leaves you with remnants of what would normally be considered dreams, but they're right there in front of you.

The situation you describe has been described throughout history. The succubus, the crone, gods, demons, aliens, ghosts, etc. all share the story of sitting on one's chest or floating above them when they wake up in bed.

I don't wake up in sleep paralysis much. I do occasionally, but I don't pay any attention anymore. Hypnagogic hallucinations on the other hand are just a part of my sleep cycle, both visual and auditory. I hear people talking or music playing often as I fall asleep. I wake up to go to the bathroom and people (or other things) are standing in the bedroom before I get my bearings. They're not actually there of course, it's just that my mind can't wrap itself around it that quickly. My personal philosophy is to not believe anything that happens between laying down and at least 10 minutes after waking up. It doesn't help that my dreams are as clear as reality, and I often get the two confused in my memory.

Anyway, my point is that what you describe can be explained as a normal experience, just that most people either never have it, or only once in a lifetime.
