Ridiculous budget blade-4 dollar Ozark Trails folders, good blade-pic heavy

If you have one of these please check your stop pin for play. I've seen an undersized stop pin fall out of one of the blue tanto models.

Even WalMart must be losing money at that price, LOL. :barf:

Saw this today..

I grabbed one and it working OK it too a good edge and it riding in my cell phone case with my Cell.

I never seen the $1 knife but I'm sure it was garbage. I got the 3-3/8" camouflage $4 knife. Its not bad. Its not good, but its not bad. Smkw cheapy Rough Rider is a better knife for a couple of bucks more. But for $4 you can throw it away and not cry about it. It don't hold an edge that's for sure, be careful.

I saw those at my local wally world. I couldn't get myself to buy anymore knives but instead got a multi-tool from same manufacture. It's actually decent at the sub 4 dollar price point.

I like knives and usually carry about half a dozen all the time. I gave my eldest son a knife when he was about 6 years old. Last year for Christmas I gave him the Bianchi by Cooper that I bought brand new about 50 years ago, before I married. That knife cost about $30 then and now is worth about $1,500. I like fine knives.

But I also like usable budget knives. It makes no sense to use a $30 - $150 knife for a new user to learn how to sharpen a knife. I like my Buck, Case and Kershaw knives. But I also like the Ozark Trail knives because they are inexpensive without being cheap.

I have arthritis and a thumb stud just doesn't work for me single handed. An assisted opening knife with a flipper toggle is very usable. But I've discovered that these $4 Walmart knives work just fine for me. I can use the flipper to open the blade about 20% and finish using the thumb stud or just flick my wrist to finish.

The frame lock is very secure, making full contact with the open blade. I have purchased several of these knives for my own use and as gifts for my sons. All seem to be excellent values.

I plan to buy more because you can't have too many knives.

Hi Guys, this is my first post here (but I lurk). I post over at Multitool.org. I've been a long time Swiss Army Knife / multitool collector, but never really got into knives. Anyways, I picked up a bunch of these and have to say, I like them. The fit and finish is good, the action is smooth, the ergonomics are well thought out, the flippers with a little loosening of the pivot flip pretty nicely, etc. A few swipes on a ceramic stone and mine are hair-shaving sharp, although they were sharp to begin with. For someone like me who is only now investigating knives, they seem like a good entry point to learn what kind of locks, blade shapes, etc you like without spending a ton of money. Just my 2 cents.

There definitely seems to be some variety in the heat treat. The tan flippers stay quite sharp for a long time. The edge holds up more poorly on the wooden handled spearpoint one. Although I do love the wooden handles!

Anyways, I see a lot of people talking about the lockup. What are y'all doing with your pocket knives where this is such a big issue. I've mostly used slipjoints over the course of my life, and if you are careful there is no issue. I've also used lockback and liner lock swiss army knives, again, no issue. I'm a novice here, but in what scenarios do you see the locks on these failing? I just can't imagine what I'd be doing in everyday life that would cause this to fail.

Used mine to hammer the + clamp onto my wife's car battery + terminal.
Somehow it got lose and the power steering kept turning of in unpredictable intervalls.

Anyways , a roadside stone would have been sufficient too but a lesser knife most certainly not.

Love these little blades, been trying to fill out the collection and get one of each - the wooden handle spear point is proving difficult to find. Web site says they are in stock in several Walmart's close to me, but they are never there when i turn up! My wife brought home the lock back pocket knife today as she knew I didn't have it - she always has a quick look when she is in the store.

I tried one of the wooden ones, but the wood got chipped by the vacu-formed plastic when I tore the package open.
Got exchanged for the tan dinosaur (since RIT-dyed blue for fun).

So while waiting for Spyderco to push out more s110v Paramilitary 2s............., I came across the big box store display for the holidays with a different selection of multitools, lights, and folding knives.

The Ozark Trail folding knives caught my eye, and the price, at 4 dollars. I've bought the pos lockback they made, but these just looked different, and figured for 4 bucks why not.

Let me say, I hate most of the entire designs from the outside, they are tip down right side only carry, they have thumb studs, and made in China. But they did have a flipper!

First the tan flipper, they don't really name the models, I'm impressed with fit and finish, no up and down play at all, flipper a bit slow but it has plastic washers! G10 for the scales on the handles.

Then I had to go back and buy the fiberglass handle tanto. I hate tanto blades, especially combo edged ones. Then to add that thumb stud. But again for the price I'm not in the luxury of being picky. The pattern on the handles is very close to the blue Benchmade 300. Blade is supposed to be titanium coated.

Well, for stocking stuffers, I'd have to say these would be great for a trashing knife, something you don't want to ruin your good blades on. As a first pocket knife you could do much worse, I know they are nicer than my first knife. I have in mind a few people to be shopping for. Like I said, I've bought the dollar Ozark Trail backlock, and literally had it fall apart after opening it from it's package, these new models are light years ahead of the old ones.

Hey buddy! congrts on your new Ozark flipper I got one of those and it great! it will serve you kindly for many year. I got to say I cant think of much more how it could be any better! and for the price of 4 dollors its even better. have a good one and enjoy new knife!

Bear with me while I reconstitute this thread.
This is a $2.87, two dollah eightyseven cents, Ozark Trail bait knife. They come bulk boxed, no packaging other than a zip tie to hold the blade in the sheath. And some days there are jobs where nothing less than a three dollar knife with a good grip will do. Today was one of them, it was spent slicing open sacks of decomposed granite..... in heavy ropers gloves.

They're BAAAACCCCCKKKKKK!!!
I stopped in Wally World the other day for some stuff and always look for closeouts int he knife case.
There they were on the spin-rack, just in time (with many weeks to spare) for Christmas!

That looks like the old Mora Clipper ... If so, HUGE value at less than $3.

Have the tan flippers been discontinued again? I still see the blue tanto bladed ones, and a few new types, but the tan flippers are the best of the bunch, why would they stop selling the best selling $4 knife?

I have two of them and really like them for the bargain basement price of $4. I'm on a trip and didn't want to travel with a knife and went to buy a tan flipper and can't find them at either Walmart in Western KY or back at the Walmarts in NE Ohio where I live. What gives? BRING BACK THE TAN FLIPPER!!!!!

I had to settle for one that has a rubberized scale with faux carbon fiber pattern with thumb stud.

Seems they show up for Christmas, get sold, then closed out at $1.
You'll have to wait a few months :-)

I bought the tan one in Hawaii on a vacation in March of 2016. First stop after the airport is usually wallworld for beach stuff, lotion, beer, etc. I did not want to take any of my better knives. It did fine for what it is for a couple weeks of beaches, tourust stuff, a little hiking and goofing off.
I still have it in my around the yard rotation. For 4 bucks, not bad....

Holy necropost.

The tan flipper is the general favorite, but I have the Buck 112 knockoff, and for a month or so I've left it open, dirty, to see how it fared. Upon inspection, just now, it's pretty freaking stainless. I haven't done any serious cutting tests, but it holds a decent edge, and I think it would serve pretty well with regular stropping.
