I'm looking for a rifle, but the catch is, it has to be pretty cheap. Any recommendations? No .22's please. I live in CA, so no "assault rifles" either, haha.

Thanks.

I was thinking about those two, but I'd really rather have a semi automatic rifle. I'll probably fall back on one of those two if I can't find any semi auto rifles though.

Semi autos are over rated.
Saiga's are supposed to be pretty good, just a little over your price range, though.Patrick

Speaking of an SKS, if you can find one in your price range, it is also an excellent choice.

For the price you are talking about I would say either an SKS or a .22. The only other semi auto that falls in that price range would be something like the Hi-Point pistol cartridge semi-autos.

A decent quality lever might be better suited as others suggested.

SKS owners in Kalifornia got suckered then screwed.

So disregarding the SKS, a centerfire rifle for under $200 is going to be real hard to find.

A case could be made for a Ruger 10-22 magnum.

But a better choice would be a lever action in 30-30. (pistol calibers would be an option, but won't likely be found for $200 or less)

A good used 30-30, either Winchester or Marlin, can be found without too much effort. It conveys a wholesome "Old West/John Wayne" image (important in Kalifornia) has decent capacity (30-30 would hold 6+1) and has enough power to do 99% of what most people would need to do with it. Ammo is plentiful and widely available.

With practice, rapid fire hits aren't too difficult, say, 1 to 1.5 seconds per shot/hit on a 50 yd IPSC target.

Get some better sights, an ammo butt-cuff (adding 9 more rds) and a sling and you have a very capable hide-in-plain-sight "Urban Assault Rifle"

What's not to liike?

Actually, I have an SKS. Well, my father does...

It has an internal mag, so it's all good. It's kinda inaccurate though. Used to have a pre ban MAK90 too but that's gone now.

I might be able to stretch the budget to 300...Anything good in that range?

I'm not up to speed on US rifle prices, but a Lee Enfield of one model or another will rarely be a bad choice.

I know some of the Saiga Semi auto.223s are cali legal and can be bought for $300 or a bit less. The do work well and have more than adequate minute of felon accuracy. Talk to gun dealers in your area to find out which models are ok where you live.

Look at the single-shot NEF Handi rifles. Lots of calibers, low cost, reasonably accurate. I like the Survivor in .308.

I recently bought a #4 Mk1 for $150. Serial numbers don't match, but it is arsenal overhauled excellent condition with an excellent bore. 1945 dated. 10 shot magazine. With Pakistani surplus, I can rapidly shoot palm sized offhand groups at 50 yards. At 100, it opens up a tinch more. I'm still getting used to the sights (where the actual POI is, elevationwise), but I can hit bowling pins (or come pretty dang close) at 100 when it comes together. The only thing is .303 ammo= expensive, compared to other surplus calibers. I also have a Finnish M-39 bolt action, which is an extremely accurate rifle. Mine cost less than $200 and shoots like a dream. It uses the ever affordable 7.62x54mmR round.

Probably shooting surplus ammo. Of course, buying Federal ammo in 20 rd boxes is going to cost quite a bit.

If all you want to do is have a rifle for the range, (I gotta think your Dad has the "Home Defense" aspect covered pretty well) then a good .22 would be cheap and fun to shoot.

buy a 10/22 for a hundred bucks beat up at a pawn shop then when ever you get extra cash get parts for it and build yourself a kick ass lil gun.
