I've seen some mention to handguns being ready to go. But has anyone besides myself made arrangements for a rifle with their BOB?

I did for a time, had a Remington .22 in my truck kit, but after awhile I realized that not all "bug out" situations will allow for the visible presence of a firearm, so I switched to a Ruger .22/45 pistol....light, fits in the kit, and very reliable.

a powerful air rifle in a soft case should be effective and shouldn't get you in trouble with the law.

Springfield M6 (.22/.410, SS) is broken down in a soft case that fits in my BOB. I have plans to hang a fair amount of stuff on the gun itself as well. (Mostly spare cordage wrapped around it.) A thoughtful selection of ammo adds weight, but ammo is tough to improvise. :p

A handgun attracts less attention and is easily stowed, but I'd opt for the M6 as well. I like the versatility of the .410 and .22 combo. As a secondary firearm, I'd probably go with a Ruger single six in .22/.22WMR with a 6" barrel.

I looked one of those over in the shop the other day. How do they shoot? It seems like a great idea, but can you hit anything with that little apeture sight and funky lever trigger?

My grandpa had a Savage .22/.410 he would never let us kids shoot it and want one, just for revenge.

I used to pack a broken down Winchester 1915 .22 pump, but recently replaced it with an AR7. It's light, accurate, takes up little room, and doesn't need a case.

A rifle will serve far better than a handgun. A .22 rimfire is the most versatile caliber in existance.

I've always wanted a M-6. Someday I'll have to pick one up.

I recently built a Remington Model 7 scout rifle in .308 as a bug out/general purpose gun. I added an Eagle stock pack to hold extra rounds and a small survival/cleaning kit. It's a great lightweight gun for easy carrying, and .308 is a good general purpose round. I normally use it as a truck gun when I know I'll be travelling through mixed range country like going from mountain to desert.

Hmmm...I keep my HK USP9f with me everywhere I go, but I wanted something a bit more accurate and powerful over distance. I have been planning on picking up a new rifle with this in mind. I would really like a rifle that was comfortable to carry over long distances as well as break down into a packable size. I have been seriously considering the Bushmaster Bullpup but have found no information as to whether it breaks down.

Robert H,

I have the same built on a GEW 98 action from the great war. Controlled Round Feeding is your friend!

My only complaint is the elastic buttcuff that allows half my ammo to disappear in the course of a day. Do you like this Eagle stock pack?

I looked at the AR7. I really like it, I am just worried about the accuracy and the relative power of the ammo. How do you like your AR7?

Like many of the members above, I find the Springfield M6 to be the perfect choice to fill this role.

It is more than accurate enough for small game, as well as medium game at close range.

The .410 shell is a nice foraging round, and can take deer size animals with slugs.

The forearm is a custom kydex piece. I have been thinking of switching to a cord wrap though.

I may also add the 2.5X scope at a later time.

Edited as a plan to take over the world.

I to have the M6 and enjoy it greatly, but my "survival" gun is now my Henry lever action. I have the short version, the youth model, which has a 16" barrel and is 33" overall. It's light, fires quickly, and feeds all varieties of .22 ammo, including shorts, longs, long rifles, cbs, etc... Here's a pic of it with my woodsbumming stuff...

Has anyone tried out both the AR7 and the M6. These both sound like great guns, I guess I would base my decision on toughness and acuracy.

Another survival type rifle worthy of notice is the Marlin Papoose. My son has one and its very accurate. He previously had an AR-7 but the case leaked and it was neither accurate nor reliable (magazines).

Both the Papoose and the AR-7 are magazine fed.

I would like to somehow make my Ruger 10/22 fit this role. Does anyone have a Ruger with a folding stock?

I have both. I've had my AR-7 to the range, and I was pleasantly surprised by its accuracy. I've only had the M6 out plinking, so I can't really make a fair comparison. That trigger is weird, though.

Somebody (maybe even Ruger?) was making a take-down stock and screw-in carbon fiber barrel for the 10/22. It was designed to be a "backpacking" gun. I'll scrounge around and see if I can find details.

I like it. The pouch is just big enough to carry a bore snake, micro light, bottle of gun oil, fire starter, and extra SAK. The five rounds keep it easy to load as I'm exiting the truck.
