So a guy I work with named Frank has been telling me for weeks that he's going to trade in some of his shotguns and a rifle on a new Sig P226. I suggested he go to this shop that I go to. I've known the owners since they opened in 2000. He said "cool. Go over there with me so maybe they'll give me a break on the price." So yesterday, we went over there after work and he brought in all of his guns and sat them on the counter. They get all done and the guy did give him a break on the price, but he said, "you can hang onto the Marlin .22 semi-auto. it's not worth very much and the time it would take to clean it wouldn't be worth the profit. It's just too dirty, rusty and nasty." I had looked at it when he first sat it down and it definitely did need a lot of lovin and cleaning up, but it was by no means a lost cause. Just needed a shatload of TLC. Well Frank said "well, just take it. I don't have any use for it." My eyes almost popped out of my head.
I interjected very quickly with "HOLD ON A SEC... if you're just going to give it to them, let me take it. I am the dirty gun restoration master and I could turn this back into a fun little woods rifle." Frank said, "It's yours." After I got home, I went down into my bat cave (the garage) and got to work. I took it ALL the way apart and really got a good look at the damage. THERE WASN'T ANY! Other than just being dirty as hell and having a little speck of rust here and there on the outside, it was perfectly fine. I soaked it and cleaned every little piece, put it all back together, and WALLAH! I got a perfectly good Marlin semi-auto for free! I had an older .22 scope in a drawer, so I threw it on there. Now I just gotta take it out to the range and site it in. Then it will be my new little camping and woods .22. I always hear about other people getting awesome stuff like that just by being in the right place at the right time, but it has never happened to me before. AWESOME!
