Rip! Cut! I need a bow saw!

I'm looking to outfit my car with some basic survival gear. One object I'm looking for is a good bow saw. I looked at Silky Saws and plan on getting a small one for backpacking, but their largest models don't seem like they'd compete with a 24" bow saw... please correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm looking for a man-powered alternative to a chain saw; something I can cut larger-diameter wood with using my muscles for power :D Something that costs far less than a quality chain saw and takes up far less space in a trunk. What do y'all advise for such an object? My brother's got an old bow saw, perhaps 36", and the thing won't let the blade sit straight; I end up sawing the wood length-wise  :o Surely, there are better solutions than this old tool!

So, whatcha thinkin'? Thanks for the input!

Last I checked these were about $12. I went through countless trees with one in my highschool days.

i like my fiskars bow saw. i have a 21 as well as a 24.

very handy, relatively cheap, good quality and replaceable blades.

try finding one in your local home depot.

cheers

How about a Sven saw from REI? I got some good reviews from guys at work about them. It's light and it folds down to a single pole.

Yup, KGD, that looks like the one my bro has, save his is two times the size and four times as rusty :p I like the suggestion of the Fiskars with its replaceable blades. I'll check 'em out. Keep those suggestions rollin' in and thanks

the replaceable blades were like 2 or 3 dollars last time i checked.

the bow saw itself was around 20-25 depending on the size.

cheers

Ace True Value sells excellent Bahco saws. I have a 21" model that has lasted many years of service. Looking to upgrade to a larger one for extended camping trips. It also comes with an edge guard.

I bought one of the real chepies from walmart for 7$ its not too bad but really doesn't cut as well as others Ive had and you get tired pretty quickly.

I would look for something a bit better than this if I were you

That's not half-bad. I'll dig around and see if I can find some.

I'll look there. I've seen mention of the Bahco name before; this sound like it's right up my alley.

Yep, those are my thoughts, exactly.

Thanks for the input, y'all! If there's more to hear, don't hold back

Get a Silky Saw. Period. Nothing compares.

I've got several Silkys but the 36 inch Bahco bowsaw is still useful for larger logs---and pretty cheap. The tension from the bow frame is strong enough to keep the blade straight so you don't get the sideways cuts mentioned above.
