RIP, Phil Lobred

We all have moments and people who represent a turning point in our lives.

As an aspiring photographer, I had the opportunity in 2003 to fill in as photographer for the AKI Show. I was asked two weeks beforehand.

Yes, I fulfilled the studio work (Thanks Rich Slaughter!), I managed to capture 40+ images of superb knives, and this show elevated me into 'professional' status.

I don't know how my path might have shaped without this opportunity. Phil Lobred was welcoming and delighted to have me.

I also spotted him in the lobby restaurant the next morning. He was sitting with Bob Loveless, and I asked to join them; they responded with a hearty welcome. We chatted for 30 mins. They went away earlier than me, and I learned from the waitress that "Mr. Loveless had paid my bill." Amazing.

I managed to get a group shot of the members that year. It was impromptu, but important.

I see at least five who have passed: Appleton, Dowell, Lobred, Loveless, Warenski. Sigh.

I am glad to reflect on this man. Thanks Steven.

I'm sad to reflect on this man.....but this is what he would have wanted.

It's not about me. It's about him......just using another medium to communicate, as so many state so frequently.

You all lost an icon, someone who was larger than life and responsible for some amazing knives. I lost a friend.

Not sure who is gonna hurt more in the long run, don't want an answer either.

It's been a crappy week. Rainy and overcast.....

Best Regards,

Steven Garsson

Here, for those of you who were lucky to be part
of Phil's amazing "San Diego Art Knife Invitational Show"
are some of my photographic memories from that magical event....
Phil invited me to the 2001 Show so that I could present the concept
of my idea for my first book on Modern Custom Knives (he let me use his suite)
"Art & Design in Modern Custom Folding Knives" to the knife makers
present at the show...
In later years the AKI Show moved to other hotels in San Diego...
Over the past 15 years, with Phil always pushing and encouraging me in the
background, I never looked back and completed 12 large deluxe volumes.

The San Diego Marriott Hotel & Marina hosted the Show during
the first few times I visited there.

And the amazing buffet that went with it...

Very sad news. A tragic loss to those closest to him and a real blow to the community as a whole.

Steven:

I came across this thread last night, which left me feeling a mixed range of emotions. Phil, was so fortunate to have such a true friend in you, & also you, in him. I can only imagine the true happiness & wonderful companionship that the two of you shared during your very special, unique friendship. :)

It would be nice if we could get together again, and have one of those delicious lobster/crab sandwiches in Encinitas, and glass of wine. We can make a toast to Phil. I'd be happy to listen to you talk about this legendary man in the knife community. :)

It's a shame that I never had the opportunity to meet Phil.

Hi Steven,

Only noticed this today. Very sorry for your loss. And he is friend of all the knife people.

He will be remembered forever.

Best regards, Simon

there are those who 'touch' us even though we may have never met them. JFK was one, as was MARTIN LUTHER KING. and ELEANOR ROOSEVELT. and EINSTEIN. phil lobred will be yet another. i'd never heard of the AKI until i was invited to attend. i'm a long-time collector of all kinds of custom knives. many of the members of the AKI are "gods" and "goddesses" to me...RIP, phil, and thanks for all you did for the knife community!...
