We all have moments and people who represent a turning point in our lives.
As an aspiring photographer, I had the opportunity in 2003 to fill in as photographer for the AKI Show. I was asked two weeks beforehand.
Yes, I fulfilled the studio work (Thanks Rich Slaughter!), I managed to capture 40+ images of superb knives, and this show elevated me into 'professional' status.
I don't know how my path might have shaped without this opportunity. Phil Lobred was welcoming and delighted to have me.
I also spotted him in the lobby restaurant the next morning. He was sitting with Bob Loveless, and I asked to join them; they responded with a hearty welcome. We chatted for 30 mins. They went away earlier than me, and I learned from the waitress that "Mr. Loveless had paid my bill." Amazing.
I managed to get a group shot of the members that year. It was impromptu, but important.
I see at least five who have passed: Appleton, Dowell, Lobred, Loveless, Warenski. Sigh.
I am glad to reflect on this man. Thanks Steven.
