RIT dye without disassembly?

From their official instructions. The instructions say to add salt for cotton clothing, or vinegar for silk/wool/nylon.

I would not use heated vinegar if I were putting the entire knife in the pot. I have seen how quickly hot vinegar develops a patina on carbon steel - like 30 seconds, and the reaction is best described as "sizzling."

If you are taking the scales off, vinegar might work better.

You might also consider using some other sort of dye like Fiebing's Leather Dye, which is just applied to the surface and doesn't require heat. I don't have any experience with using it.
