Hi all, I have been looking at these two knives . Witch one do you think I should buy . One has s30v and one has vg10. Im going to use it for EDC from time to time and skinning small game . My son and I will be going squirrel hunting soon so thats what the knife will be used for most. Skinning the little tree rats :D. Thanks for any input.

the CAly is the best slicer I have ever owned. I reco forkin out a few extra bucks and gettin the ZDP model, you WONT regret it! Oh, and if you really like S30V, the almost exact same, UKPK features that steal though its a slip joint, no biggie IMO. Never owned a ritter so I cant honestly compare.

Some food for thought (both VG10 CAly's, ZDP Caly & original UKPK w/ S30V)

I have to say the Caly 3. It's one of the best ergonomic designs I've held, and it's sleek and cool looking without the appearance of being a really large blade.

It is a very efficient slicer, too

I'd go Ritter.

The blade has some belly for skinning, though squirrels are a more cut and peal proposition.

Full-size or mini?

I like the mini version more for carry, though I do keep a full size in my carry bag.

Not a fan of VG-10, either.

How good is ZDP ?

Ask Vassili. :)

ZDP-189 is a very hard steel that takes a great edge and holds it forever. Above S30V in edge retention.

VG-10 is fine for most uses though, and you won't feel bad about having messed up CF scales.

How good is ZDP ?

Probably better than you need, ZDP is a very hard steel with high levels of wear resistance. You could clean more squirrels than you could eat before that steel went dull, the down side to this is its hard to sharpen but its not that bad if you have diamond stones.

VG-10 is a good steel and not far behind S30V but S30V's extra wear resistance would never come into play at the intended task. VG-10 is easier to sharpen and can take a very fine edge and hold it long enough to get the job done. The blade design of the caly will also make it excell at you needs.

I have a fullsized Ritter and a CF Caly3.

They're both excellent blades :D

Ritter is an excellent blade shape, excellent steel, and very durable. While the Caly3 has awesome ergos, carrys perfectly, and (imo) is one of the best EDC blades out there.

You really can't go wrong with either :)

Although the Caly3 CF is more of a "dressy" knife, and I wouldn't want to take it outdoors at all (unlike the Ritter).

I'd definitely go with the Caly 3 myself. I have the BM that is similar to the Ritter, and am not real fond of it, both the ergonomics and steel (I have the D2 version) leave something to be desired. ZDP is a fantastic steel, very hard and very wear resistant. After that, I would pick VG10. Very good edge retention, and also very easy to sharpen. The ergonomics on the Caly 3 are great.

Caly 3 in ZDP and you will find your desire for something else just seems to disappear.

I'd go with a Ritter, only because there are steel liners.

I see knifeworks has a Spyderco stretch in zdp with blue handle . The blade looks like it would do well for my task as well. Plus the price with the zdp steel seems good.

I have both the Mini Grip and both the Caly 3's and prefer the Mini-Grip for EDC.

In terms of Caly 3 G10, VG10 vs CF, ZDP I actually prefer the G10 VG10 Caly 3. The steel is good enough, easier to sharpen and the G10 is so much gripper than the Smooth Carbon Fiber and the G10 version costs a lot less. I'm actually thinking about seeing if I can trade my used ZDP Caly 3 for a new G10 Caly 3.

I'd get the Ritter Grip over the VG-10 Caly 3, the ZDP Caly 3 over the Ritter Grip and the Ritter grip with Wilkins scales over the ZDP Caly 3. I'd take a ZDP Caly 3 with custom Wilkins scales and an axis lock over all of them. Next question.
