Mike Sastre is still here, isn't he?

He's the first person I would go to.

Edited to add:

^ But, while he makes fantastic sheaths.... you might want to check GB&U first.

Wow...one post from 7 years ago? No grudge there, not at all! The other link was dead.

Seriously? That is your basis? I'll continue using him and recommending him.

Why wouldn't you do your own search?

It's not just one post from 7 years ago, you asked what it was about and that was the best summary from a well known collector with first hand experience.

The other link should have gone to the search results.
It's not up to me to post 2 pages of links, I was just trying to help answer your question.

If you learn how to do an advanced search - use his full name and search the GBU forum you will see for yourself.

He takes your knife and the payment up front while customers wait 12 to 18 months with no communication.

If you read some GBU threads you will see that pattern over and over again.

He's not Bob Loveless, why would you wait a year for a plastic sheath?

Well, let's point out the obvious here.

Have you ever worked with Kydex or Concealex to make a sheath?

Have you ever MADE a sheath?

Have you ever had something CUSTOM made for you?

Did you ever think OTHER people might desire custom work as well?

You don't request something that is unique..then harass the maker for not doing it RIGHT NOW.

If you want a mass produced sheath, go buy one from Brigade Quartermaster or US Cavalry. I believe WalMart carries sheaths as well.

If you want custom work, there is this thing called PRIORITY OF WORK for the maker. Just because "you want it" doesn't mean they should skip everything else they are working on just to cater to you. Harassing them with emails and phone calls only INTERRUPTS their work.

You've heard of Randall knives? FIVE YEAR waiting list.

Ernest Emerson custom knives? FIFTEEN Years.

Pulling a Veruca Salt attitude about custom work only exposes inexperience and inability to understand what custom work really is.

I'm famallier with custom work from both the buying and selling end.

Sorry, didn't know you were a fanboi; I'm not here to get into a pissing match with you.
Please try re reading my comments.

You asked about the nature of the complaints against him, presumably because you don't know how to use the search function.

I summarized the info and showed you where the original post was so you could do your own research and make up your own mind.

It's not fact that there is a wait list, but taking $$ upfront, and lack of communication that has and will kill many many careers.

If you read some of the hall of shame posts, you will see that these are the very things that cause the undoing of many many custom makers.

It's about managing your workload and customers expectations - under promise, over deliver.

Taking $ up front and then being unavailable really frustrates customers.
Especially on something like a sheath with very low material and labour costs, up front payment is unusual.

One customer of his couldn't get a reply to emails, forum posts or phone calls until he sent a registered letter, that's a bad sign.

Go do the search and read the threads of people with actual experience with him.
They have chosen to use alternate makers with shorter lead times.

I only tried to help you find information, no need for personal attacks, I won't make that mistake again.

I moved it posts from another thread. Please discuss the topic and not each other.

I would wait 5 years for a Randall. I wouldn't wait 15 minutes for an Emerson. As for sheaths I couldn't recommend Claude Scott enough! He is one hell of a talent when it comes to sheath making!!

I cannot speak to his abilities or as far as letting the customer know what is going on. but if you cannot contact him through this forum, i suggest trying him on cold steel forum, he is very active.
