Rivets... No Rivets?

Custom 110 owners (or those thinking about a custom 110):

Did you/would you go for rivets on your custom knife? On my first one (stag, fingergrooves, nickel bolsters, BG-42), I went ahead and got the rivets. Beautiful knife that I carry both hunting and hiking.

The folks at Buck assured me that the scales weren't going anywhere with the space-age adhesives that they use, but there was something about the rivets that made the knife look more like a traditional slipjoint.

Right now, I'm thinking about a very similar knife except with the Asian Waterbuffalo scales. Once again debating the rivets question.

What did you decide?

Guyon, for me, on stag I went without rivets, because of the texture I thought it would be too busy...on smooth wood or the smooth waterbuffalo I would go with the rivets. Does the custom shoppe page have pictures with and without rivets? ICR. Either way I don't think a person can go wrong. Check out a previous thread posted about a new custom just received in this forum maybe 3-5 days ago, good picture of the stag with rivets. Preston

When I look at a nice knife, like a Buck, I want to see rivets. If I don't, all I can think is: what, is this scale just taped on????:( And then I think: when will it fall of????:( I'm sure it won't. But.........

I assumed the pins still went well into the scales, just not all the way through.

Nice pics Mike. Your photo album gave me a new perspective on the Buck Alaskan Guide 110. The Cabela's site makes the logo look awfully obtrusive. Your actual picture of the knife makes it seem less so. Rethinking my next Buck knife now, actually.

I, too, am having trouble deciding whether I want a Cabela's S30V 110, or a customshop Buck 110. The Alaskan Guide version has a better blade steel and is cheaper, but a custom 110 will look how I want it.

I want a custom 110 with the blue wood (I forget the same) and nickel bolsters. I would want to have the rivets on that knife- nice contrast. If I got Asian Waterbuffalo, I wouldn't get the rivets. They might detract too much from the scales.

I sure wish they would make those finger grooves deeper. They are only just barely there.

I prefer no rivets myself. I have a custom in elk without rivets and a custom in stag without rivets on the way. I just prefer the cleaner look.

Tom

I prefer rivets as they are part of what gives the look of a 110 a link to older traditional knives, including slipjoints. Without them, I think the knife looks like its missing something.

I like the rivets also. I saw a picture of a custom shop 110 a couple of days ago, sambar stag with fingergrooves, BG42 blade, rivets, and nickel silver bolsters, and I just about slobbered on the keyboard! Bucks website doesn't have photo which does the stag justice at all, the few custom shop 110's I've seen so equipped are simply beautiful. I really do need one of these..........................:D

I wonder if we saw the same knife. One of those was on ebay last week. Absolutely beautiful. Odd thing is it costs $124 shipped to get a new one, and this one sold on ebay for $191. Maybe someone thought the Sambar Stag was exceptional. Anyway, some time ago I had decided to order one exactly like it, and once it went over $124, I went ahead and placed my order with the Buck Custom Shop. I'm hoping to get it in time for Christmas. :D

I agree about the stag -- the photos I've seen of Buck Custom Shop Sambar stag have all been way nicer than what it shows on the website.

Ah, rivets. When I finally do a custom, if I choose something spartan for the scales, I will probably go with rivets. If I choose something a bit busier visually, I'll probably go without.

My sentiments exactly! :)

On stag I prefere no rivits. On wood I like the 'classic' look of the rivits. I also try to match the bolsters for a good look. Cherrywood with brass, and Damascus, Indigo Blue with nickle. I also like finger grooves.

I have a Sambar Stag 110 custom, finger grooves, nickel bolsters. I went without rivets because of the unevenness of the Stag. I ordered a custom with asian waterbuffalo. I thought the brass rivets would look good. Have to say that I was a bit disappointed because I didnt realize the the water buffalo was so wavy. The rivets were not flush and IMO detracted from the overall look because they were very noticeable against the smooth (but uneven surface). But that's just me. It could also have been that particular knife.

My rule of thumb: If the surface is flat, rivets look great. If the surface is uneven, skip 'em.

It's been awhile, so I'll repost a pic of my Sambar Stag Custom w/out rivets. She's a beaut.
