Rivets or no rivets?

Since I may be ordering another 110 from the Custom Shop, I started tinkering around there. I think I will get one with Rams Horn inlays because I don't have any made from that material.

Now I have to decide if I want rivets or not. Do the rivets perform a real function and make the inlays more secure? Looking for opinions.:thumbdn:

The aesthetics of handle rivets or no handle rivets are a personal preference. I will say that for inlay materials that are prone to crack (pearl, horn, some stag for example), I always feel safer without handle rivets. It is my opinion that handle rivets just provide more of an opportunity for the material to develop a small hairline crack at the rivet because the integrity of the inlay has been diminished. When you factor in the fact that modern epoxies are not so prone to dry out or lose their effectiveness, my reasoning aims to avoid compromising the inlay material. I cannot give you anything besides anecdotal evidence from observation of many knives over the past 20 years or so and if you disagree, you may be correct! Besides, with most inlays, I personally prefer the look of the inlay without the handle rivets.

Plum,
ordinarily I like the rivits but I vote without on this one-if you dont like it once you get it I guess I could suffer to take it off your hands:p

For wood type slabs I like the rivets, but for bone, antler, horn etc. I don't prefer rivets. They have a hard time sitting flush due to the texture and detract from the natural material.

Thats drop dead sexy Ed! My Ram's horn 110 has been shipped, But it's not here yet. The point of rivets compromising the handle and allowing cracks to start is something I did not consider, But now that it has been pointed out to me, I can see that possibility! Mine has the brass rivets and bolsters. I just love the look and it's the signature look of the 110 from the begining. I would hope the rivets are all the way thru the liners and help to hold on the scales. I'll know for sure in a day or 2. Mine was ordered on 3-17 and I was notified that it shipped on 4-11. Not too bad of a wait at all!
