RJ Martin Overkill w/ CF Inlays or Rick Hinderer XM-18 3.5"

I agree with Tony. There is no thing as a "deal" with a custom knife. If the maker is good, his work is already in too much demand. The waiting list will be long and take 6 months to a year before one gets made for you. Production knives there is always compromises. Custom made knives are perfect by design for the owner. Once you go custom it's hard to look at another production knife the same way. Les Robertson really knows the custom knife world. He is also easy to work with so give him a call. Les only carries the best of he best knife builders.

People fail to mention that Rj has won best "Tactical" folder at the blade show 4times!!! I've got an Overkill,Q-36and "Devastator".
I love them all but the liner lock is the smoothest. If a Xm-18 has little to no detent than I wouldn't want it flipper or not. I've heard very little good about Hinderers as far as consistency of there knives. I always see posts of new xm-18 buyers wondering if there blade should just fall open in the pocket or won't flip. There way overpriced. I did get on a waiting list a year ago and had my choice for $495 from Les Robertson. That I would pay. They are good to trade with I've heard.

How many Hinderers do you own? If none, then shut up until you do.

I've been thinking about aquiring a Q-36. On RJ's site the Overkill and the Q-36 are listed seperately and they look like different knives.

I posted both terms in YouTube and I get the same knife in videos - the Overkill??

Tony8179 or anyone else have a few of these and care to elaborate on a few pros or cons on these models please? I'm interested in balance, weight, blade thickness, ergos etc..

Q-36

Overkill

Devastator

...

I wish I could afford all 4 of the knives he has available on his site right now. Tony 8179 said he's not taking orders anymore so maybe they're not available, but the order/quote button and prices are displayed.

Does RJ sell through any dealers where you might catch a slight break on prices?

I don't need or want an RJ Martin folder. I already have more than any of them, in my small herd of Hinderers. See where I'm going with this?

I guess where you should be going is out of this thread since you apparently changed your mind, or actually had no interest to begin with.

I'd go with the Hinderer. I do like RJ Martin's designs though.

I guess where you should be going is to the Hinderer forum. I have been acquing Rick's XM-folders and suggest that you buy a few if you haven't already. I was inerested in RJ's knives but I've gone completely about face and much prefer them to the offerings of Mr. Martin. I would think you might understand that a person can change their area of interest in collecting and also defend their favorite knife when members post ridiculous things about them and don't even own one.

I didn't barge in this thread and put down RJ Martin folders. Someone else did - but they chose the wrong company to attack. ;)

There's nothing wrong with the XM-18 or the Martins. It all depends on what you want from a knife. If you want an overbuilt sharpened prybar made for tough work then the XM-18 is what you want. They really don't flip well and the detent is weak. These are facts. If you want something a bit more sleek that you could carry at work or play then you may want to look into an RJ Martin folder. The edge in thinner and you would never want to use it for a prybar. These are facts.

We're talking about two different styles of knives that shouldn't even really be compared.

I own both. The Overkill gets used, the XM-18 has been sitting in my safe for a while. When I buy some knives, I sometimes fail to grasp that I want to buy a cutting tool. So obviously the one that does that task best is the one I use.

I have no quarrel with RJ Martin's offerings and would buy one in an ideal world (especially the Q-36). First, I don't think he takes new orders (last time I checked the site). Second, I honestly don't have bottomless pockets and Hinderers cost a lot of money too. Especially with a few add-ons and you're in the same price range.

I am one of those "sharpened pry bar" guys if we're going to label but my XM-18 3.5" with spanto blade took the corner off a 4 foot hunk of fresh 2x4 with one easy slice top-to-bottom. Duratec 20CV is nothing to scoff at and takes a heck of an edge that lasts too. I think it's synonymous with M390.

I agree 100% ;)

Now I have played with an XM-18 and what I had read is very true when it comes to looking at it from a "Flipper" perspective. Obviously its a great knife in every other way.

What have you been smoking dude? I'm not complaining - I can't get an RJ Martin because 1. I think they're too much for my budget and 2. I like the big old honking Hinderers. I might be wrong about RJ Martin folders but from watching a lot of videos, they seem very cool but not as heavy duty as Hinderer. Just say so if I'm wrong about that.

My Hinderers are 2 XM-24s and 3 XM-18s, not that it's any of your business but since you asked.

Sorry I told you to shut up 2.5 months ago Knife Viking. If that's what's got you mad. Let's agree that they're both cool knives okay?

The detent issue has been addressed. I have a gen 4 that fires open like an exocet missile. As for the rest of the crap being thrown around in this thread: I think it's laughable that anybody could talk so much garbage about one of the highest quality and most saught after knives anywhere and still expect to be taken seriously. Yeah, I guess the knives got as popular as they are because all Hinderer fans are delusional. . .

Thanks brother - for posting that ^

Why didn't I get one of the new Gen 4 slicers??? I thought the stiff detent would be a pain in the *ss, but I realized just this minute that it's what RJ Martin and Darrel Ralph knives use to store the energy for speedy flip. Plus they're in my favorite Hinderer steel DT20CV. I had to buy another XM-24 instead. shakes head :(

You guys need to start playing nice right now as this behavior is an embarrassment to the forum and is not going to be tolerated. Take the b.s. and disputes offline and leave it there or infractions will be meted out.
